You Are Not Your Brain: The 4-Step Solution for Changing Bad Habits, Ending Unhealthy Thinking, and Taking Control of Your Life, by Jeffre

Two neuroscience experts explain how their 4-Step Method can help identify negative thoughts and change bad habits for good.

A leading neuroplasticity researcher and the coauthor of the groundbreaking books Brain Lock and The Mind and the Brain, Jeffrey M. Schwartz has spent his career studying the human brain. He pioneered the first mindfulness-based treatment program for people suffering from OCD, teaching patients how to achieve long-term relief from their compulsions.

Schwartz works with psychiatrist Rebecca Gladding to refine a program that successfully explains how the brain works and why we often feel besieged by overactive brain circuits (i.e. bad habits, social anxieties, etc.) the key to making life changes that you want—to make your brain work for you—is to consciously choose to “starve” these circuits of focused attention, thereby decreasing their influence and strength.

You Are Not Your Brain carefully outlines their program, showing readers how to identify negative impulses, channel them through the power of focused attention, and ultimately lead more fulfilling and empowered lives.

Review
“A testament to mind over brain ... It's the truth of the matter that sheer willpower can truly make you break free.”
—Leonardo DiCaprio

“Operating on the highly rational perspective that we are not our brains, but rather, substantial free agents who exercise control over our brains, Schwartz and Gladding develop a simple, yet profoundly insightful approach for developing a flourishing life. The result is truly life-giving, and it will bring healing and hope to all who read it and practice its wisdom.”
—J.P. Moreland, author of The God Question

"How can the brain, which is just a complex network of interconnected nerve cells, give rise to consciousness and to thought? Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz and Dr. Rebecca Gladding argue, persuasively, that the mind actually has massive causal effects on the functioning of the brain. In other words, you can not only change the way you think, feel and behave through conscious effort when you're upset, but you can also change the programming and chemistry of your brain. A compelling and important message."
—David Burns, M.D., author of Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy

“The idea that we can deliberately and systematically change our brains with our minds was once thought ridiculous. But now, largely due to Jeffrey Schwartz and his UCLA research on neuro-plasticity and OCD, this once revolutionary idea is well accepted. Rebecca Gladding and Jeffrey Schwartz adapt Schwartz’s extraordinarily successful program for a mainstream audience giving simple, self-directed tools to help achieve greater happiness, emotional balance, and overall well-being.”
—Susan Kaiser Greenland, author of The Mindful Child

Powerful Books Shows How-to Self-Direct Your Life
By Don
"Habitually dismissing and devaluing your true emotions and needs causes your brain to adopt unhealthy responses and to strongly discount much of the positive information about you that is coming in." -- Jeff Schwartz, MD, and Rebecca Gladding, MD

I was well aware for some months that Jeffrey Schwartz's new book (co-authored with Rebecca Gladding) was coming out. When I saw the package from amazon.com on my front porch last week, I quickly opened it. The reward circuit in my brain got activated as I held the hardcover book with bright yellow lettering that told me: YOU ARE NOT YOUR BRAIN!

Jeffrey Schwartz is a pioneer in the field of self-directed neuroplasticity, and his work with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (as described in his book BRAIN LOCK) is highly regarded and used in clinics around the world. In this new book, Schwartz and Gladding have refined the 4-step method used in "Brain Lock" as well as expanded the scope of how it can be applied to lifestyle habits, addictions, and unhealthy thinking.

The 4-Step process is based on mindfulness. I found their revised process very clear and easy to grasp--and it can easily be used personally or by counselors, psychologists, and others to be shared with clients as a form of treatment. The 4-Step process includes 1) Relabeling (noticing thoughts), 2) Reframing (naming the brain's deceptive thought pattern to change your relationship to the thought), 3) Refocusing (placing awareness elsewhere), and 4) Revaluing (aligning with one's deeper values, or true self).

The book is a treasure trove of real-life case studies that demonstrate how Schwartz and Gladding used the 4-Step mindfulness process--and show how anyone can rewire their brain in this way. This is a step-by-step book that includes examples of charts and journaling methods that can help anyone track their movement toward wellness, clarity and purpose.

I highly recommend this book. It shows how to put the power of focus to work in a way that can change lives for the better. Thank you Jeff and Rebecca for sharing with all of us this very valuable and life transforming information!

Tremendously helpful
By E. Whalen
I bought this book after reading "The Brain that Changes Itself" by Norman Doidge, MD, which is a fascinating book. In it, Doidge mentions Schwartz and his method for helping patients who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

In "You Are Not Your Brain," Schwartz and Gladding expand on that method and help the reader apply it to other problems that result from what they call deceptive brain messages. I have also heard these deceptive brain messages referred to as automatic negative thoughts, core beliefs, et cetera. Essentially, they are ideas/beliefs you have that lead you to engage in bad habits, feel terrible about yourself, avoid taking actions you need to take, and generally prevent you from living the life you want to live. One example the book gives is an actor who doesn't believe he's good enough and therefore does not go on auditions for parts and, as a result, sabotages his own career success. In short, these false messages are running your life and it's time to stop listening to them. This book teaches you to identify these false brain messages, how to deal with them and how to take back control of your choices and your life.

Could this book have been written in a more engaging and perhaps slightly more cohesive way? Sure, but I bought this book for what it could teach me, and it has taught me a great deal. It goes beyond what a lot of books say, which is to write down and challenge the deceptive brain messages. Yes, that's helpful, but the steps in this book, especially the steps about doing something constructive and engaging while allowing those brain messages to continue to play on in the background are what really creates lasting change in your brain.

I liked the concept of the "Wise Advocate." You can re-cast it, if you like, as the role of a higher power or perhaps "Your Best Self," but the result is the same: to teach you to look at yourself with kindness, compassion and to believe the best things possible about yourself.

This book also contains tables you can fill in, either in the book itself or on a separate piece of paper. I found these tables to be quite helpful in really getting clear on what my messages were and what they were costing me.

Before this book came out, I had tried various methods for dealing with my deceptive brain messages, but the method described in this book is the only method that's really worked for me, and so for that, it deserves five stars. If you are looking for a good companion book to this one, "The Brain that Changes Itself" is excellent, but it's not instructive. This one is.

Fantastic - Very Practical and Useful
By Book Fanatic
I read a lot of books and I have a hard time imagining anyone with an interest in practical results not finding this book valuable. I noticed the previous reviewer panned it because it wasn't full of detailed scientific descriptions, despite the fact that would probably turn most of its intended audience off. This is a common problem in book reviews. People read a book, like this one whose intent is to provide a practical technique and then criticize it for what it is not and was never intended to be. This book wasn't written to convince you of its theoretical foundation or educate readers on exact "neural pathways", although it does touch on that lightly. It was written to help you so get over it. This is a self help book and in that regard succeeds brilliantly.

The case histories included throughout this book are people with moderately significant problems (I would say even sometimes pretty severe). However, don't let that dissuade you because I think virtually anyone who is a normal human being would find the advice practical in many circumstances. I don't have any issues even remotely approaching those of the people described in the book but I still found it very helpful.

This is a fairly long book for this genre (approximately 350 pages) and it is very well organized. It includes a lot of worksheets and practical tips. I have no major criticism at all. I would recommend it to anyone who wants practical advice on how to improve their mental well-being and that includes people who think they are doing well already. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Text book
By J. Rodriguez
If your a student and your class requires you to get the 5th edition of this book, don't get the 5th ed. You will be fine with this edition. It is is pretty much the same thing. The chapters talk about the same thing, same pictures, and exact same words. The only difference i found was that they pretty much cut and pasted the sections within the chapter and put it in a different order, so page number is a little different. But all the sections are in the same chapter. Get this edition if your on a budget. Its the same book different cover. I mean $20 vs. $110?

PLEASE READ REVIEW BEFORE PURCHASE!
By Kindle Customer
Please, please make sure that you talk to your instructor before purchasing this book to see if you need an access key with the book. This book DOES NOT automatically come with the access key. The access key is a code that you enter online to gain online access to all of the additional resources that the class has to offer, which is called the Development Lab. My professor did not use the Development Lab in her lectures so this book was perfect for me! However, if you need the key, it is probably going to be cheaper to purchase it all together, as a set. Otherwise, I did see where Amazon was selling the access key for $40, which was still cheaper than what my school was selling it for. I read the other reviews prior to purchasing this book and it seems as though this is where people were the most frustrated with purchasing this book. So, make sure you talk to your professor first! This truly is an awesome text! Very well written, easy to follow!

Concise with current views on life development psychology.
By MERCEDES TARONGOY
I used this book in our Life Development Psychology. In the course of my study, everything I needed to know is in the book. Feldman is very thorough and organized. I have read other books on this subject in our library but by far this is a superior book. This book deserves 5 stars.

Who's Afraid of Modern Art?: Essays on Modern Art and Theology in Conversation, by Daniel A. Siedell

Modern art can be confusing and intimidating--even ugly and blasphemous. And yet curator and art critic Daniel A. Siedell finds something else, something much deeper that resonates with the human experience. With over thirty essays on such diverse artists as Andy Warhol, Thomas Kinkade, Diego Velzquez, Robyn O'Neil, Claudia Alvarez, and Andrei Rublev, Siedell offers a highly personal approach to modern art that is informed by nearly twenty years of experience as a museum curator, art historian, and educator.

Siedell combines his experience in the contemporary art world with a theological perspective that serves to deepen the experience of art, allowing the work of art to work as art and not covert philosophy or theology, or visual illustrations of ideas, meanings, and worldviews.

Who's Afraid of Modern Art? celebrates the surprising beauty of art that emerges from and embraces pain and suffering, if only we take the time to listen. Indeed, as Siedell reveals, a painting is much more than meets the eye.

So, who's afraid of modern art? Siedell's answer might surprise you.

"Dan Siedell is always interesting, even to this atheist Jew. He asks important questions about art and belief, and helps me better understand my own passions. I love how he writes that modern art is the 'hell of self-knowledge.' So true, and so worth asking why."
--David Raskin, Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL

"The problem with Christians talking about the arts is that Christians are still talking about the 'problem' of the arts. Where others see problems, Dan Siedell sees opportunities. If religion is about socialization and control, then Siedell expertly reminds us that modern art doesn't play by these rules. When we give up control in the art space, Christ is there, and He will guide us. This is a landmark work, a signal achievement in the field."
--Gregory Alan Thornbury, President, The King's College, New York City, NY

"In addition to being a fan of Dan's writing, I have heard him lecture on modern art in my seminary class. Christian engagement with art is especially intriguing when done by an actual artist who has spent his adult life in the contemporary art world. Even where other epochs are celebrated, modern art is often dismissed by Christians as unintelligible and even offensive. I've grown in my appreciation for the insights of modern art through Dan's expertise, and I am sure you will as well."
--Michael Horton, Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California, Escondido, CA

Daniel A. Siedell is Presidential Scholar and Art Historian in Residence at The King's College in New York City and Associate Professor of Christianity & Culture at Knox Theological Seminary, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Daniel Seidell changed my life!
By ryan.roehrig
Siedell has changed my life. For too long I have battled against the Churches constant desire to secularize and making Church and Faith just one of many options. In reading Siedell I was forced to put my American ways behind me and see how God works, beyond where we expect him. We try too hard to make God this happy joyful person who doesn't actually suffer with us and die with us. Modern Art has shown me the Theology of the Cross in a magnificent way. My seminary education has come full circle in Siedell's work. I can honestly say that without him God's work of forgiveness in Jesus Christ would be just some therapeutic garbage. This book is worth reading for anyone who is a Christian Artist struggling to find their identity, but also to any Christian who is confused by art but also if their Church seems empty and full of therapeutic, Disney like faith. Siedell shows what true, faith trust and love of God is that Luther spoke of. Faith that trusts even when it seems like utter nonsense to believe. Faith that looks at death and says there is life... Thank you Daniel you changed my life!

Mr. Siedell is helping me to stop and think about Modern Art. Though I can barely say the title, I will never look at Piss Christ the same way again.

Great book to have
By Caitlyn Shipley
Great book to have! I had to have it because it was the required textbook for a class, but I must say that I would've purchased it to have for reference if I didn't have to have it! Great book with a lot of review questions. I like that all of the terms are at the end of each chapter as well as in tables, broken down even further within the chapters instead of just at the end of the book.

A heavy book, but it gets the job done.
By manazonian
It's pretty heavy, and bulky, and it has a lot of nonsense factoids, but it is what the seller said it was--for the most part. It's a book filled with medical definitions. Shipping was at a decent pace. Not a lot to complain about.

What's The Matter With Energy, by Joseph Y. Hui

Among the problems the world faces today, I consider the three E's: Energy, Environment, and Education to be my mission to solve. This book is my answer to these problems. I survey as much as I can the nature of energy. I focus on inventions since antiquity to collect, store, convert, and use energy. Many of the inventions described are mine, put in the context of a proposed paradigm shift that I call personal energy. Personal energy focuses on human needs in 6 areas: water, electricity, environment, food, information, and transportation. We should live comfortable, yet sustainable. My goal is to reverse the Thomas Edison centralized model of power generation and distribution, to be replaced by local collection, storage, conversion, and use of energy. The energy source should be primarily renewable, assisted by fossil fuel as a backup energy supply. We cannot keep trashing up the earth. I tell the story from the point of view of scientists and engineers. I focus on their purposes. Science comes from a love of nature. Engineering comes from a love of mankind to solve their daily problems. I wrote this book for our young people. They are our best hope to improve our world in the 3 E's. I want them to learn for 5 reasons: curiosity about the world, fun of learning, faith in their ability to reason and invent, love of mankind by helping people through innovation, and a pursuit of the infinity and beyond. This book is full of stories of famous scientists and engineers. Their ideas are explained in simple English. Each topic is laid out on 2 pages in full view. Each topic has a simple equation such as F=Ma, made easy to understand with a numerical example. I use plenty of big colorful pictures. CONTENT: 1- ENERGY MATTER: What is Matter, State of the Matter, Space and Time, Force of the Matter, What is Energy?, Force Field, Matter in Spacetime, Matter is Energy, Conservation of Energy, Energy and Climate Crises, Conversion of Energy 2- FIVE KINDS OF ENERGY: Origin of Forces, Gravity Force, Gravitational Energy, Electric Force, Gravitational Energy, Electric Force, Electric Energy, Magnetic Field, Magnetic Induction, Weak Force, Solar Energy, Strong Force, Nuclear Energy 3- FIVE KINDS OF ENERGY: Momentum, Energy-Momentum, Electricity, Electric Circuits, Temperature, Heat Energy, Chemical Bond, Chemical Reaction, Light Waves, Photonic Energy, Energy Engineering 4- MOTION WONDERLAND: Locomotion, Pendulum Motion, Spinning Motion, Catapult Motion, Rocket Motion, Hydraulic Motion, Liquid Motion, Water Turbine, Water Pump, Spiral Gas Flow, Fluid Dynamics, Wind Turbine, Tesla Turbine, Hui Turbine, Sound Motion 5- ELECTRIC WONDERLAND: DC Motor, AC Motor, Monarch Disk Motor, Solar Man Maglev, Magnetic Rail Gun, Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics, Ion Thruster, Ohm's Law, Electric Heat, Sound, and Light, Semi-Conductor, Electro-Chemical, Electro-Dialysis, Monarch Tubeworm 6- OPTICS WONDERLAND: Light to the World, Black Body Radiation, Photosynthesis, Optical Fiber, Laser, Optical Telescope, Solar Man Grill and Ellipse, Solar Power, Silicon Solar Cells, Multi-Junction Solar Cells, Thin Film Solar Cells, Lotus Awning, Lotus Mobile, Lotus Butterfly 7- CHEMICAL WONDERLAND: Genesis of Elements, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrocarbon, Nitrogen, Fuel cells, Galvanic, Acid, Alkaline, and Lithium Batteries, Flash Distillation, Forward Osmosis. 8- HEAT WONDERLAND: Thermodynamics, Heat Engine, Heat Pump, Gas Expansion, Working Fluid, Stirling Engine, Steam Engine, Internal Combustion Engine, Gas Turbine, Hui Heat Engine, Chilling by Absorption, Ammonia, or Carbon Dioxide, Monarch Firefly, What is Entropy? 9- CONCLUDING MATTER

Review
Hi Joe, Thank you so much for the copy of your book, delivered to me by my colleague, Angelia Nedich. I ve enjoyed reading it. I m not done yet, but there s plenty of good stuff in there I ve never studied (e.g. quarks) and stuff I ve studied but not thought about in a long time (e.g. triple point and super-critical fluids). Your putting it all together and emphasis on engaging young people is brilliant. It s becoming more and more clear the the future of the human race is in a precarious situation regarding its use of resources. I appreciate your efforts to promote renewable energy we need to do better at adjusting for demand/supply fluctuations. Best regards, Bruce Hajek, Professor of Electrical Engineering University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign --Private correspondence

About the Author
Joseph Hui attended MIT, obtaining his BS, MS, and PhD degrees all in a short 6 years. He then worked at Bell Labs, Bellcore, and IBM before joining Rutgers University where he became Professor of Electrical Engineering. He became ISS Chair Professor of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. Professor Hui is a prolific inventor. His master thesis was patented as an energy and bandwidth efficient modulation and error control code on the Intelsat 6 satellite. His PhD thesis entitled "Fundamental Issues of Multiple Accessing" laid the theoretical foundation for modern wireless communications such as GSM, CDMA, and UWB, for which he held fundamental patents. While at Bell Labs and Bellcore, he made important discovering in broadband networks and switching, on which he wrote a first graduate level textbooks and filed important patents. He also has many patents filed on mobile ad-hoc networks, cloud computing, and computer virtualization technologies. He wants to solve the most urgent problems of the time: Energy, Environment and Education. The result of his persistent pursuit resulted in many patents on solar energy, heat engines, batteries, water purification, and transportation He retired his chair professor in 2014 to devote himself full time to help people all over the world live a comfortable yet sustainable life through his inventions. His many inventions are coming to the market, including a personal AC system, a turbine driven super car, and a distributed energy system call the Firefly. Firefly technologies produce combined cooling, heating, power, pressure, work, and water. He believes he will start the fourth industrial revolution based on the Firefly technologies. The revolution is based on a revolutionary spiral heat turbine. His motto is "Energy is sexy", and his turbine has the 10'S properties: Smart, Small, Simple, Scalable, Strong, Safe, Saves, Smooth/Silent, Stores, and therefore Stylish/Sexy. This book summarizes his years of thinking on energy and the environment. It gives the big picture, but is encyclopedic enough to teach you everything you want to know about energy. This book also describes 13 of his basic inventions on energy, in the application areas of water, electricity, environment, food, information, and transportation. He also appears in public as the super hero Solar Man, draped in a cape that is the Arizona flag. He drives around town in a yellow Tesla Roadster that is powered by a solar energy collector. Currently, he is modifying the collector to be powered by both concentrated solar power as well as propane. He is passionate about energy and climate justice for the poor. His fourth industrial revolution reverses the centralized electricity generation model of Edison and Tesla, to be replaced by the model of personal energy. Personal energy is a local collection, storage, conversion, and use of clean energy. He wants to industrialize Africa with his Firefly technologies, without the use of big power plants and grids. He plans to send energy and environment ambassadors to poor parts of China, India, and Africa. The Solar Man Motto is "fighting for fair and affordable solar power of the people, for the people, and by the people." He invites you to join this revolution. Save the planet. Save the poor from energy poverty and environmental disasters. You can start by reading this book "What's the Matter with Energy". Written simple and colorful, you will be inspired to help people live comfortable and sustainable. Reading this book will inspire in you a passion for science and technology. This book breaks traditional textbook conventions in multiple ways. Firstly it explains extraordinarily difficult science concepts in digestible ways, its illustrations are clear and interesting, and it also connects concepts to applications and inventions. I used to think that science wasn't for me, but after reading this I became more aware of energy all around me.
