The participants were continually faced with questions which can be reduced in number only by thorough training: What do I do next? Where shall I fire? Who is now in charge? Shall I fire? Will firing expose my position? Shall I wait for orders? To us who comfortably read accounts of the engagement the answers may seem evident. We must remember that confusion, like fog, envelops the whole battlefield, including the enemy. Initiative, any clear-cut aggressive action, tends to dispel it. In battle the terrain is the board on which the game is played. The chessmen are the small units of infantry, of armor, and the various supporting weapons each with different capabilities, all designed for the coordinated action which makes for victory. No one piece is capable of carrying the entire burden. Each must help the other. Above all, the human mind must comprehend which, for the instant, has the leading role. There is no time out in battle. Teams must be prepared to function in spite of shortages in both personnel and equipment. They must be practiced and drilled in getting and retaining the order necessary to overcome the confusion forever present on the battlefield. This is the outstanding lesson of these pages. If heeded they will have most beneficial effect on our Army. We, the victors in this war, can ill afford not to examine our training methods continually. Do we drill as we would fight? Do we instill in the soldier discipline and a knowledge of how to get order out of battle confusion? If not, victory will cost too much.

About the Author
Charles B. MacDonald, compiler of this volume and author of two of the studies, commanded a rifle company in the 2d Infantry Division in World War II and is the author of Company Commander. He is now on the staff of this office writing a volume on the U. S. Army in Europe. Sidney T. Mathews, author of the third study, was a member of the Historical Section, Fifth Army, during the war, wrote the study entitled "Santa Maria Infante" published in Small Unit Actions of the series AMERICAN FORCES IN ACTION, and is a Ph.D. in History of the Johns Hopkins University. He is now on the staff of this office, writing a volume on the U. S. Army in Italy.

A poor scan of a decent book.

There are many mistakes left in after an optical character recognition (OCR) scan of this book. Many maps seem to be missing. The maps that are included are small. Many times & for no apparent reason a picture of a physical page of the book is inserted.

Worst, IMO, footnotes appear in the middle of the text, often with NO indication that they are not part of the narrative. The reader is left to determine from context how much of the paragraph(s) that follow are actually footnotes.

The book is available free in PDF format online. Don't spend a dime for this one. (The PDF version has none of these problems.)

While otherwise a four or five star book, the kindle version is absolutely unreadable. Missing words, missing sentences, scrambled sentences, footnote entries in the middle of the text and titles where they don't belong. It's not even a bargain at under $3.00. Do not buy this book!

Good advice.

I enjoyed the book and will do my best to follow the advice and teachings. I was very surprised that a book written by an Orthodox priest makes no mention at all about the Jesus Prayer. The Jesus Prayer has been used for centuries in the Orthodox Christian Church for spiritual warfare.

An authoritative and reference textbook

One of the best book on inborn error of metabolism combined with pediatric endocrinology. Well written, clinically oriented and provide deep understanding of each disease. Highly recommend to all endocrinogist with special interest in metabolic diseases. The initial sections of acute clinical and emergency management both from diagnostic point of view and initial therapeutic intervention are valuable part of the textbook. The screening of inborn error of metabolism is well written and the classification of diseases making the reading of textbook a pleasant experience.

Excellent Autobiography

This was the first book that I have ever read that helped me feel not so alone with maternal sexual abuse. It was not really "clinical" but instead was written by a woman who is a clinician but gave her personal account of what happened to her. There are precious few personal accounts written on this subject and for those of us who have been sexually abused by our mother's it's definitely one to cherish.

Tool for Survival

Author Julie A Brands hits the nail on the head with this short, easy to read book. As a survivor of mother-daughter sexual abuse, this book helped me to know that I was not alone and that the things that happened to me were not all "in my mind". An excellent tool for those who have gone through this little known form of child sexual abuse as well as for those who are trying to understand a woman who has gone though this.

Great Story

I work with a number of women who were sexual abused as children. Several were sexually abused by their mothers. This book has helped my patients realize that they are not crazy or alone. It is a difficult read, but well worth it if you want to understand the complexities of the impact of abuse on a child.

Yet her real achievements have been embellished--and even obscured--by myths that have grown up over eight centuries. This process began in her own lifetime, as chroniclers reported rumours of her scandalous conduct on crusade, and has continued ever since. She has been variously viewed as an adulterous queen, a monstrous mother and a jealous murderess, but also as a patron of literature, champion of courtly love and proto-feminist defender of women's rights. Inventing Eleanor interrogates the myths that have grown up around the figure of Eleanor of Aquitaine and investigates how and why historians and artists have invented an Eleanor who is very different from the 12th-century queen. The book first considers the medieval primary sources and then proceeds to trace the post-medieval development of the image of Eleanor, from demonic queen to feminist icon, in historiography and the broader culture.
