useful guide on learning Chinese language

In my opinion, Chinese language is one of the hardest languages to learn. However, Henry Ray did a good job on this book as this makes the readers learn Chinese easily by first presenting the basics of Mandarin Chinese like the consonants and the pronunciation. The inclusion of sound clip could really help the reader learn the proper pronunciation. Then it also tackles on the counting and number as well as two ways to say number "two". There are also grammar, commonly used questions and answers and a lot more on Chinese language. Although the book says "Learn Chinese in 21 days", I don't think I can learn that so quickly but I found this very useful on learning the language.

Fun way to learn Chinese.

Learning Mandarin is fun and at the same time beneficial if you are like me who loves to travel specifically in Asian countries. This book aims to teach us the correct grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and key phrases in everyday conversations. This is easy because it starts from the very basic then slowly moves up to parts of speech, word order and other unique features of Mandarin. Each topic was carefully selected to enhance the learner’s comprehension and appreciation of the language. This is a great guide; the approach is effective to speed up my learning to this fun and unique language.

About the Author
Dr. Robert E. Hall is a prominent applied economist. He is the Robert and Carole McNeil Joint Professor of Economics at Stanford University and Senior Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, where he conducts research on inflation, unemployment, taxation, monetary policy, and the economics of high technology. Dr. Hall received his Ph.D. from MIT and has taught there as well as at the University of California, Berkeley. He was the president of the American Economic Association for the year 2010. He is also director of the research program on Economic Fluctuations of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and chairman of the Bureau's Committee on Business Cycle Dating, which maintains the chronology of the U.S. business cycle. He has published numerous monographs and articles in scholarly journals, and co-authored a popular intermediate text. Dr. Hall has advised the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Board on national economic policy and has testified on numerous occasions before congressional committees.

Dr. Marc Lieberman is Clinical Professor of Economics at New York University. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Dr. Lieberman has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, labor economics, and international economics. He has presented his extremely popular Principles of Economics course at Harvard, Vassar, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Hawaii, and New York University. Dr. Lieberman has won NYU's Golden Dozen teaching award three times and has also received the Economics Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is co-editor and contributor to THE ROAD TO CAPITALISM: ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IN EASTERN EUROPE AND THE FORMER SOVIET UNION. Dr. Lieberman has consulted for the Bank of America and the Educational Testing Service. In his spare time, he is a professional screenwriter and teaches screenwriting at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

Introduction

I saw my first toaster oven twenty years ago, when I was staying with a friend who used it to toast bread and bagels. But I didn't get one of my own until I wrote The Best Convection Oven Cookbook, which included a chapter of convection toaster oven recipes. That's when I first started to actually cook in the toaster oven, and right away I was hooked.

Over the many years that I have been cooking, teaching and catering, I have become used to cooking meals for anywhere from six to two hundred people. So it was second nature to me to turn on the big kitchen oven when I was at home, even when I was cooking for just a few people.

Then I realized that this convenient countertop item was really just a tiny oven, and that it really would cook. I could make entire meals for three or four in it. I could bake cakes, pies and bread in it. I could roast and broil in it. An I could even use it for reheating and toasting bread and bagels! Now the toaster oven is a permanent appliance in my kitchen.

Not only convenient for students, singles, young couples, empty-nesters and retirees, the toaster oven is also ideal for families. Kids can easily learn to make themselves nachos, mini pizzas and French toast. Introduction

I saw my first toaster oven twenty years ago, when I was staying with a friend who used it to toast bread and bagels. But I didn't get one of my own until I wrote The Best Convection Oven Cookbook, which included a chapter of convection toaster oven recipes. That's when I first started to actually cook in the toaster oven, and right away I was hooked.

Over the many years that I have been cooking, teaching and catering, I have become used to cooking meals for anywhere from six to two hundred people. So it was second nature to me to turn on the big kitchen oven when I was at home, even when I was cooking for just a few people.

Then I realized that this convenient countertop item was really just a tiny oven, and that it really would cook. I could make entire meals for three or four in it. I could bake cakes, pies and bread in it. I could roast and broil in it. An I could even use it for reheating and toasting bread and bagels! Now the toaster oven is a permanent appliance in my kitchen.

Not only convenient for students, singles, young couples, empty-nesters and retirees, the toaster oven is also ideal for families. Kids can easily learn to make themselves nachos, mini pizzas and French toast. this book has great recipes. they are easy to follow. i was especially interested in the convection toaster oven recipes and would have liked more on this subject. i use my toaster oven several times a day and these recipes give me more ways to use it effectively.

But it is not what I was hoping. I am retired, also retired from food preparation. I purchased a new convection toaster oven and was looking for simple ideas for quick preparation.

Having joined the National Guard for the tuition benefits, Crawford, like many of his contemporaries, never expected to do any heavy lifting. Early on, he admits his is "the story of a group of college students... who wanted nothing to do with someone else's war." But when his Florida National Guard unit was activated, he was shipped to Kuwait shortly before the invasion of Iraq. Armed with shoddy equipment, led by incompetent officers and finding release in the occasional indulgence in pharmaceuticals, Crawford cared little for the mission and less for the Iraqis. "Mostly we were guarding gas stations and running patrols," he explains. As for Iraqi civilians, "I didn't give a shit what happened to any of them," he confesses after inadvertently saving an Iraqi boy from a mob beating. Crawford's disdain grows with each extension of his tour, and he leaves Iraq broke, rudderless and embittered. Unfortunately, Crawford dresses up his story in strained metaphors and tired clich�s such as "truth engulfed me like a storm cloud" and "you can never go back home." Despite its pretensions, Crawford's story is not the classic foot soldier's memoir and should provide enough gristle to please military memoir fans.

We crossed the berm the same day as the Army's Third Infantry Division, leading the invasion of Iraq. When the Third Division was sent home, our National Guard unit was passed around the armed forces like a virus: the 108th Airborne, First Marine Expeditionary, 101st Airborne, and finally the First Armored Division. They were all sent home, heroes of the war. Meanwhile, my unit stayed on, my soul rotting, our unit outlasted by no one in our tenure there.

Crawford and his unit spent months upon months patrolling the streets of Baghdad, occupying a hostile city. During the breaks between patrols, Crawford began writing nonfiction stories about what he and his fellow soldiers witnessed and experienced.

The world hears war stories told by reporters and retired generals who keep extensive notebooks and journals. They carry pens as they walk, whereas I carry a machine gun. War stories are told to those who have not experienced the worst in man. And to the listener's ears they can sound like glory and heroism. People mutter phrases like, "I don't know how you did it." And they look at you wondering how you have changed, wondering if you have forever lost the moral dilemma associated with taking another person's life.

In a voice at once raw and immediate, Crawford's stories vividly chronicle the daily life of a young soldier in Iraq-the excitement, the horror, the anger, the tedium, the fear, the camaraderie. But all together, the stories gradually uncover something more: the transformation of a group of young men, innocents, into something entirely different.

The true life of a soldier

Its far too easy for a civilian to stick a magnetic yellow ribbon on the end of their SUV, say nice things supporting whatever war we happen to be fighting, and believe they are supporting the troops. Many will not like what I am about to write but most Americans are so ignorant about what these men and women have to put up with that it is criminal. Movies portray glamorous fight scenes and non-serving pundits talk about "doing one's duty" without ever serving one day themselves ignoring the the hardships carried by soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and their families.

John Crawford's book offers a view into the weary world and mind of a combat soldier. It isn't glamorous and offers nothing in the way to justify the war in Iraq. It is about one man trying to survive and keep some small part of his sanity dealing with things that are completely alien to the fat and lazy civilians for whom our wars are at best episodes in some low rated reality show.

It works!!!!!!

Ok so first I want to say this program truly works but may not work for everyone. Or foe some it will take far longer than for others. The main difference between this program and Rosetta Stone is this: Rosetta Stone works best for those that are visual learners where as this works best for people like me who are audio learners. With Rosetta Stone it will show you several pictures of someone wearing a red shirt, someone playing with a red ball, etc and it's teaching yoj the word for red which is "rojo". Thr problem for me was I ended up focusing on the pictures and not the spanish word or the sound of the Spanish word. Same thing when it's teaching you word for cat (gato). It will show you many pics of cats and I became distracted by the photos and breeds of thr cats rather than just focusing on the sound of the word "gato". Also with Rosetta Stone they jump into basic phrases right away where as this program teaches you every single word BEFORE the phrase. I loved this because then you can speak the phrases all by you self because you know the building blocks of the phrase. Learn in Your Car is truly amazing and like other reviewers I found I was learning spanish without really knowing I was learning it. I do recommend listening in the car without distractions. If you have too many distractions you won't learn it. I tried using the program at work with my headphones and while doing data entry. This didn't work for me because my mind was too focused on thr data entry and the English words I was typing.
I could go on and on but I have completed level 1 (all 3 discs) and went to Costa Rica recently. I WAS able to communicate there!!! And when they spoke slowly enough I could almost always understand what they were saying to me. I certainly didn't always respond with the exact right phrasing but I spoke well enough that they knew exactly what I was saying. It was so exciting! If you are dedicated to learning this program will probably work for you. Im even able to roll my R's now where as before I had no idea how to do that!! Oh and thr little booklets that accompany the discs are fantastic to carry around with you at all times for reference.
In summary, I've tried different programs including Rosetta Stone and even books and workbooks and Learn in Your Car has worked best for me.

Spanish in Your Car VS. Learning Spanish Like Crazy Lite

I am posting the same review under both titles. I have both sets of CD's. They are VERY different from each other. Each has strong & weak points. Which you chose depends on your goals.

Advice:
If you are leaving for a Spanish-speaking country within one month, and if you want to be able to get by and ask "At what time does the last bus leave for the beach?", "Where is the bathroom?", and "The air conditioning does not work.", then buy Learn Spanish in Your Car. No question.
If you have never taken any Spanish in school and do not even know what it means to "congugate a verb", then buy Learn Spanish Like Crazy. No question.
If you know the very basics, and want to build your vocabulary quickly, like for a vacation, buy Spanish in your Car.
If you want a supplement to a Spanish class you are taking or about to take in a classroom setting, buy Spanish Like Crazy.

Summaries:
Learn Spanish in Your Car:
Lots of vocabulary quickly. Travel focused. Does NOT teach verb congugations until far into the course. I took 1 year of Spanish in school 20 yrs ago. If I did not already know that "tengo" and "tiene" are the same root word, I think I would have been fairly lost with this course from the onset. Within a month on commuting, however, I think this course will have you getting by for a vacation. If you care mostly about getting by (directions, time, booking a hotel room, buying a bus ticket), and not about perfect grammar, I like this a lot.

Spanish Like Crazy:
Starts like a Spanish class would in school. You start by congugating -AR verbs. Then you learn questions, "Do you practice Spanish?" and possessive pronouns. The lessons are like drill sessions: "Now ask, 'Is the coat his?' Now answer, 'no, it is not his coat. It is mine.' Now say, 'It is my coat, but the hat is not mine'." Intense, but you'll know the grammar by the end. Vocabular comes later, but it does not seem travel oriented.

I like using them both. However, I have 6 months before my trip to South America.

Faulty labeling on one of the CDs

I am rating this four stars instead of five not because I don't like it but because there is something wrong with one of the CDs. I need to try to figure out where I bought it so that I can maybe exchange the one. One of them is labeled wrong, so that I ended up with two CDs with the same lessons on them.

Otherwise it's a good course. I drive a lot and use it every day. I already speak Spanish, but not fluently, and I'm using this to learn a few new things, but mainly to keep Spanish in my brain every day.

Raymond A. Huml, MS, DVM, RAC is Executive Director of Global Due Diligence in Quintiles Capital Solutions ('Capital') for Quintiles Transnational Corp. Dr. Huml has over 20 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. In his current position, Dr. Huml identifies risks associated with Quintiles global (US, EU and Japan) product-based investments, working with specialists on all components of the due diligence process, including research and development, commercial, intellectual property, and conflict of interest. He previously worked in Biostatistics, Medical Writing, and Regulatory Affairs Departments in Quintiles Clinical Development Services group. Dr. Huml has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications, and is a strong supporter of the Regulatory Affairs Professional's Society (RAPS). He holds an MS in Biology from East Stroudsburg University and his DVM from North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, and has earned the RAC (US) Certification.
