Great Writer

I could only give it a four though because it seems to be directed specifically at black young men and that is a shame...it should be for EVERY young man to read. The reason I say this was I am in college to learn to teach art k. - 12 and as a white person I was given the task of acquainting myself with black culture so i could teach black children, per them, more effectively. I have a young son and 4 brothers, all white, and I can tell you that this is the same advice any color man would give to any color child. I also have cousins who are mixed. OUTSTANDING BOOK. ...and I hope the marketing changes to emphasis our similarities, not our differences. ...I am just speaking to the marketing because Mr. Harper presents men and women of all colors for young people to emulate, including John Kennedy...my black uncle was with Robert Kennedy the night before he died. Mr. Harper your book is just great.

I have read this book, and I personally wish I had the book when i was growing up. This is the type of gudie that would lead a young man to a better path. Too many of young men of color are in trouble and labeled as troublemakers. Here is a guide that a father,uncle or mentor could use to help a young man to develop. The 100 Black Men service organization has a affirmation

After re-reading the book, I have purchased the paperback and I'm sending it to my nephew. To Manifest his destiny, I believe thsi book will be intrumental in helping him reach his goal of going to college this year. I also believe if any of my other nephews read the book it will help them along with thier destinies as well. Once again I recomend this book for any father trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow or uncle, big brother or father figure

forget the title

Forget about the title. Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens -- not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper and his extremely phat friends will make inroads where even caring teachers and parents might not. The book could easily have become sappy, but it never does.

Harper's inclusion of his celebrity friends and of full-color photographs of him partying with them might provoke some teen to read the book who might not at first been inclined to do so. It was another spot-on move by Harper. I am really grateful to him for providing young people with such a frank blueprint for growth.

Students who might be Caucasian and affluent will still love the book's message that everyone -- even handsome, successful TV stars -- sometimes feel lonely, have trouble approaching members of the opposite sex, and make mistakes.

What about straight-A students bound for Yale? They will be attracted to Harper, who graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude. The school's jocks will love that Harper was a college football hero. For the free spirits out there, Harper begins each chapter with a pithy quote from sources as disparate as the Persian poet Rumi, former President Bill Clinton, and rapper Andre 3000 (nee Andr� Benjamin). Harper really has a hook for most of the cliques in American high schools.

VERY misleading title

I preordered this book with great expectations that at least 90% of it would contain pictures from the wedding. To my chagrin, this was not so at all. I think you should include this "little" fact in your description of the book. I am sure that most of the people who ordered this book will be equally disappointed. I may yet return it because it was certainly NOT what I wanted.

As an avid Royal watcher I was very excited to see that Life had put together a Royal Wedding. Although Life is a well respected media outlet I was greatly disappointed in the book I received. For one, the book is 'thin' for a commerative eddition. Secondly there were about 5 pictures of the wedding, making majority of the book about Will & Kate's life leading up to the wedding. If you want a nice collector's edition on this historically epic event I would strongly suggest the commerative additions of Newsweek, US magazine (one of the best out!!), & TIME magazine. LOTS of wedding photos! Also, their family history & of course their university days. More tastefully done. Bottom line. LIFE is a disappointment & I will be returning my copy.

I was expecting a book ON the wedding itself. There was certainly enough going on to fill a book. Instead, 3/4 of the book is cut and paste from previous publications specifically, The Royals & The Royal Wedding. What's UP with that?

I would have rated this a no-star if I could...

The book, entitled 'I Am Jerusalem', is the memoir of retired dental surgeon John Tleel. Born in Jerusalem, to a long-standing Palestinian Greek Orthodox family, Tleel of life in Jerusalem from the 1930's through the 1970's. The book is made up of personal memoirs, historical background of many of the events of this period, and in-depth description of many of the places and people in Jerusalem. One of the unique focuses of the book is the descriptions of the Greek Orthodox monasteries, churches, and religious ceremonies. The memoirs are replete with personal events in the life of Dr. Tleel; for example, he describes taking a room as a boarder in Beirut while studying dentistry, conversations with the patients who come to him to be treated, raveling in the Middle East before and after the establishment of Israel, and learning Hebrew after the 1967 Israeli occupation of the city. Larger events which effected the entire population of Jerusalem are described from his own perspective-- for example, taking refuge in the Old City of Jerusalem during the 1948 war, attending 'Sebt an- Nour' on the Saturday before Easter in the church of the holy sepulcher, and being under curfew so the Israeli census could count the population of the city in June of 1967. In general, the book is written for someone with limited knowledge of the Palistinian-Isreali conflict. Tleel often gives basic background on various issues either before or after telling a related story. In addition, the book is written from a distinctly Christian perspective. For example, 'As imperfect beings as we all are, we should continuously pray and ask God the common Father to show us the way of accepting one another'. Other sections of the book are fascinating and useful for everyone, including persons who are extremely knowledgeable of this period of history. For example, Tleel details the little-documented changes in Jerusalem after 1984 War -- the closure of Jaffa Gate and the New Gate, the influx of refugees into the old city, and the efforts of the monasteries to temporarily house them. He also describes the days of the 1967 war and seeing the Israelis for the first time in the streets of Jerusalem. Furthermore, Tleel was the dentist of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch and other clergy and tells many personal stories about them as well as his observations of them and events during highly significant political occasions. At least one third of the book is devoted to the Israeli occupation to the city following the 1967 war. Tleel is a self-described proponent of peace , and in the book he talks about what he sees as many of the lost chances of peaceful settlement to the conflict. To this end he describes meetings and organizations he participated in with Israelis. Critical of both the Arab policies and the Israeli occupiers, he sees Jerusalem as an eternal city, not to be ruled or governed by anyone permanently. The book is entertaining and at times very successful in creating a vivid and moving description of an event or analysis of a situation. For example, 'Jerusalem after the 1967 war became a physically united city, but at the same time became schizophrenic mentally. The Jewish population of the western section is always celebrating and rejoicing and the Arab and Eastern part is in deep mourning; when our city is silent, asleep and in complete darkness, our next-door neighbors are dancing and singing in their streets which are decorated with banners and multicolored bulbs.' About the Author
Dr. John N. Tleel was born in Beit Jala on August 3, 1928. He is Rum (Greek) Orthodox Palestinian. In 1945, he graduated from the Greek Orthodox Gymnasium (Classical Secondary School) of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem in the Old City of Jerusalem. In 1949, he received the Diplome De Docteur En Chirurgie Dentaire de la Faculte Francaise de Medecine de Beyrouth. He is the founder, owner, and editor of the monthly Al - Zambaka (To Triphyllo) magazine. For two decades (1952 - 1972), this multi lingual periodical served the various communities of Jerusalem. From 1965 until 1985, he represented the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem at the Middle East Council of Churches as a lay delegate. He is founder member of the National Christian Association, the contributor of the essay My Jerusalem to the book entitled Jerusalem City of the Ages, published by the American Academic Association for Peace in the Middle East (1987), and the author of the Ecumenical Life in Jerusalem, a study sponsored by the World Council of Churches (1991). He translated from Greek into English the five Memoranda of Constantine Mavrides (The Siege of the Old City of Jerusalem from May 14 until December 15 of 1948), published in the book entitled Jerusalem 1948, by the Institute of Jerusalem Studies and Badil Resource Center (1999). John Tleel is the author of I Am Jerusalem, a self published memoir (2000). He also wrote a number of articles concerning the Holy City of Jerusalem, and extracts from this book appeared in various publications. Dr. John Tleel is a recipient of several awards and decorations.

Personal account of Jerusalem

A highly personal story about one man, his family and his city in a time of war. John Tleel is a resident of the Old City of Jerusalem. He was 20 when the 1948 war broke out that pitted 5 Arab armies against the new state of Israel. As a member of the Greek/Arab Orthodox he was in Beirut at the time. His house was in the `new city' just across the walls from the Old City. During the course of fighting it was destroyed and he and five other families moved into the old city as `refugees' where he has remained since. A proud member of the Christian community of the Holy Land this book tells his story and the story of his community through the time of the British Mandate. Key insights are given into the culture of the Arab Christians and there history, particularly his family, which immigrated to Israel in the 17th century. A very personal account, of help to anyone interested in the period. It is tinged with political bias and his own views, but this makes it very personal, readable and accurate, in the sense that personal experience is accurate from the tellers point of view.

Reconstruction's Freedom Road

Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South.

This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail.

This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

Vision of a New World, and Denunciation of Tyranny

Based on historic facts for those who care to dig deeply enough, Freedom Road presents a searing, alternative view of Reconstruction, using the words and work of the people it helped; the people for whom freedom was recently earned with great difficulty, and not to be forsaken at any price.

Freedom Road should be required reading for any devotee of quality fiction, for anyone who thinks they know the story of Reconstruction, and for anyone who is not afraid of being presented with issues that cause anger, introspection and, ultimately, hope that a better day has finally come.

Still fighting the Civil War

Wan't quite clear on some points of reconstruction. Although I was surprised at the amount of Northern involvement in trying to recreate the Southern "aristocracy". It was a very informative book. I lived in Alabama for several years and now live in Virginia. I am originally a mid-westerner so I ha d quite a cultural adjustment to make. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially to those who have never lived in the South, it explains a lot of their attitude/bias on several counts.
