Purple Cover vs. Brown Cover

I have been using this book since I began teaching design and the design process 16 years ago and LOVE IT! BUT, for some reason this version has removed a number of very helpful images and drawings. SO, I recommend ONLY the original Brown cover or the NEW UPDATED CLASSIC in BROWN cover.

approaches to creative problem-solving

A MUST READ: I first found the Universal Traveler Creative Problem-Solving Guide in its 1976 edition, and since then have kept it by my side to review frequently. It is a special treasure of tips on getting organized mentally to solve problems and to meet life's challenges. It balances critical thinking with one's psychological factors superbly. It presents reaching goals and problems--solving as a journey in life, and uses travel as the metaphorical means of conveying its ideas. It starts at the very beginning of one's thought processes to analyze problems, to set goals and to reach solutions and goals. Its life problem-solving strategies are "whole" methods that combine mind, sense and emotion. I like the 1976, edition, with its delightful historical, turn-of-the-century pen sketches. The new, 1991, edition is reorganized and presents the authors' evolutionary travels in problem-solivng adventure, and has late 20th century pen sketched metaphors. This is a valuable book to have. It is a good modern companion to the Dale Carnegie books "How To Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living". It is a great choice for helping to set and met New Year, New Century and New Milenium resolutions.

"The translations themselves are lively, vigorous, colorful, and direct, while remaining very close to the Greek; I laughed out loud more than once when I realized that, yes, this was exactly what Euripides had said. Arnson Svarlien has also taken care with the meter. Iambic trimeter, the 'spoken' meter of Greek, has been represented with iambic pentameter in English; but even in the lyric passages, whose meters do not translate into English, responsion within odes has been preserved. Yet all of this attention to such details of meter and accuracy sacrifices nothing in clarity or pace. Arnson Svarlien's translations are an ideal introduction to Euripides for students with no Greek and little knowledge of the ancient world. They remind me of why I love Euripides."

Worth it

Of the Greek tragedies I've read so far, Medea is my favorite. The footnotes are informative and provide a lot of important context. While I wouldn't go so far as to call this a bad translation, there were places where I found the word choice boring or overly simple. "The pain is good as long as you're not laughing," seemed particularly clunky compared to the "My pain's a fair price to take away your smile," I was familiar with. But overall this translation is coherent and flows reasonably well.

More modern than I had expected

Far darker and more modern than I had expected. I can see why this play lives and remains famous long after more traditional plays of its times have become obscure. Far more realistic in some way than Shakespeare, honestly. The argument between Jason and Medea at the very end feels incredibly true to life; bitter recriminations, neither side listening to what the other has to say, leading to absolutely no resolution; no sense of justice whatsoever, either from society or the Gods, and no sense of any to come, either. I mean, Jason paid for what he did, granted, but there's no sense that justice really figures into it. Of course, this is all in translation, so of course it seems more modern in that sense than Elizabethan theater, but the story itself contains so much less poetry in its structure that it's honestly hard to believe that this piece is 2,000 years older than, say, Hamlet. Not, of course, that that's everything; Hamlet is a masterpiece, too, but one of a very different sort. My point is more that there's considerably more to get out of at least this bit of Greek theater than you might think, if you've never read any...

I enjoyed the story very much, and it was nicely put together! Accurate!! I found myself reading more and writing notes for class in the margins. It may be an old story but it's definitely still intense!

About the Author
Jiu-Hwa Upshur received her B.A. at the University of Sydney in Australia and Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan. She is the author of two catalogs on Chinese art and many articles on Chinese history and has lived and traveled extensively in China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th edition, 1994) and co-editor of LIVES AND TIMES: READINGS IN WORLD HISTORY (1994). Since 1993 she has been a member of the world history committee of the College Board.

Janice J. Terry is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is the author of THE WAFD, 1919-1952: CORNERSTONE OF EGYPTIAN POLITICAL POWER, MISTAKEN IDENTITY: ARAB STEREOTYPES IN POPULAR WRITING, and numerous articles on contemporary events in western Asia. Dr. Terry has lived and traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Africa. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994). In 1990, she received an award for excellence in teaching from the state of Michigan.

James P. Holoka received his B.A. from the University of Rochester, his M.A. from SUNY, Binghamton, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he was a Rackham Prize Fellow. He has taught Greek and Latin, classical humanities, and ancient history since 1974; he received a teaching excellence award in 1980 and a scholarly recognition award in 1991. He is a published translator and the author of three textbooks and over sixty scholarly articles and reviews in such journals as American Historical Review, Classical World, Classical and Modern Literature, and Transactions of the American Philological Association.

George H. Cassar received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of New Brunswick and his Ph.D. from McGill University. He is presently Professor of History at Eastern Michigan University, where he has taught European and military history since 1968. His output is extensive and includes half a dozen books on various aspects of the First World War as well as co-authorship of A SURVEY OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (1987). In 1985 he received the prestigious Faculty Award for Research and Publication from Eastern Michigan University. He is currently working on a book related to British strategy during the Great War.

Richard D. Goff received his A.B. from Duke University, his M.A. from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He has taught courses in western civilization and specializes in teaching twentieth-century world history. He is the author of CONFEDERATE SUPPLY and encyclopedia articles on southern history and culture. In 1983 he received a distinguished faculty service award. He is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994).

Originally bought this book for history class, but it's an interesting read by itself. One of the few history books I've seen that genuinely tries to stay impartial and tell it like it is (or was, rather).

About the Author
Dr Harvey J. E. Rodda graduated in Environmental Science from Lancaster University and completed his PhD in the Department of Geography, Exeter University in 1993 in the field of hydrological modelling. He is currently a director of Hydro-GIS Ltd, a consultancy company providing specialist services in hydrology and GIS mostly within the private sector. Since 2005 he has been a visiting lecturer at University College London, Department of Earth Sciences, teaching a hydrology module as part of the Geophysical Hazards MSc course.

Professor Max A. Little began his career writing software, signal processing algorithms and music for video games, then moved on by way of a degree in mathematics to the University of Oxford. After postdoc positions in Oxford investigating rainfall and biophysical time series data, he won a Wellcome Trust fellowship at MIT to follow up on his doctoral research work in behavioural and biomedical signal processing. He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at Aston University and a visiting professor at MIT's Media Lab.

Not bad, but not great

I'd read the Amazon excerpt and had high hopes. I found the story compelling, and the subject interesting; unfortunately, the author tends to describe everything in the same consistently flowery prose, which I found a bit distracting. After a short while, it felt like treading water while waiting for something to happen. Still, it's a tale worth reading.

Good, but short

I really enjoy Leigh Alexander's writing across the Internet, and was happy to support her in buying this published book. I'll be honest -- while it raises interesting points about the role of technology in our lives and includes fine-grained detail of her childhood growing up among blocky, ancient computers and beeping, screeching modems -- I wanted more. The writing sparkles and is deeply thought-out in the pages that recall her childhood of creating maps for long-forgotten Apple games and spending hours in chat rooms as a teen, but the book goes by fast (it's around 100 pages), and I feel like she breezes through her transition into adulthood without that same sense of detail and wonder. When it's over, you're left thinking, "Wait, that's it?" If you enjoy her writing, it's definitely worth a read, but be prepared to be left wanting more.
