History Project Earns an A
By C W Kelley
My daughter had to do a project on an event in American History for a Middle School History Fair. I had never heard of this plague in America-- we thought it would be a great idea as no one else would be doing it! It was fascinating to both of us. She wrote her paper and posted it on fake headstones made from styrofoam sprayed gray. She got an A. Easy read. Lots of facts. You really learn how blessed we are to have modern medicine!

Philadelphia’s Yellow Fever Epidemic
By Acute Observer
An American Plague

In the 18th century Philadelphia was the #1 city in America. In 1793 they suffered an outbreak of yellow fever, a disease of unknown origin then. In August people noticed more cats were dying every day. Streets were unpaved and lacked covered sewers. Philadelphia was the capital of the Federal government. President Washington proclaimed neutrality in the war on France (Chapter 1). Eight people died in one week that August. Dr. Benjamin Rush called it “bilious fever”. They believed it was caused by the bad smells from rotting coffee beans. The “humoral theory” influenced medical thinking. Rush advised evacuation of the city (Chapter 2). Many left the city, the doctors could not agree on a treatment (Chapter 3). People left the city , businesses closed, there were thousands without wages (Chapter 4). Food became scarce. The Free African Society provided nurses for the sick and dying until they too suffered from the disease (Chapter 5).

Dr. Benjamin Rush recommended phlebotomy (bleeding) or purges as a cure. Others disagreed (Chapter 6). Medicine still used old methods that were hundreds of years old. An extra-legal committee was created to run the city (Chapter 7). Other cities banned people from Philadelphia. The dying continued, the crime rate up, there was rioting. The plague spread to the outer areas (Chapter 8). The Federal government had to operate in Philadelphia (Chapter 9). Cold weather brought an end to the plague, as with other epidemics. The plague led to changes, like cleaner streets and a waterworks that avoided local wells (Chapter 10). There was a conflict in the College of Physicians as to the cause of this plague. Yellow fever reoccurred in the following years. Yellow fever was a problem in major port cities in the 19th century (Chapter 11). Also in foreign countries. The discovery of bacteria and viruses meant disease could be caused by creatures that couldn’t be seen by the naked eye. Malaria and yellow fever ended the French attempt to dig a canal in Panama.

The use of DDT and other chemicals was questioned (p.136). The mosquitos that survived would pass on this quality to their offspring so a new mosquito emerges after seven years. No company has produced a vaccine in recent years, there is still no cure for yellow fever. Another outbreak can kill thousands in a big city today. The ‘Sources’ list the many books and journals referenced for this book. There is a section about “Other Plagues”. “Rats, Lice, and History” by Hans Zinsser tells about typhus fever, and other fevers. “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson tells about environmental problems with DDT and other chemicals.
