The Contract, by Melanie Moreland

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways. Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss. Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract— fiance instead of PA. What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love? Sparks. That’s what happens. Can the power of love really change a person? Will they survive the contract? What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

Review
"You all know my love for Melanie Moreland's work and I absolutely loved The Contract." ---Mystical Lit Lounge

About the Author
Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.

Richard and Katy
By Lisa
This was my first time reading this author Melanie Moreland, I must say pleasantly surprised. This book was awesome. Richard and Katy were quite a pair. They both had terrible childhoods, but we're really good people. They were funny, emotional and good actors (lol). I love a book with an ending and I'm not left wondering. Thank you.

The Contract
By Melanie Moreland

Richard, an high-flying advertising exec, an unrepentant tyrant to everyone around him, a man who despises everyone, especially his personal assistant, Katy. Katy, an all-suffering assistant, perfect at her job but unable to put her far too demanding boss in his place. She puts up with behavior that would have me telling my boss where to stuff it and send me running to Human Resources. But she has a reason for tolerating Richard’s attitude, an aunt with Alzheimer’s Disease, whose care Katy pays for. She can’t afford to be fired or to quit. Who’d ever dream these two opposites could ever fall in love?

When he doesn’t receive a coveted promotion, Richard decides to try to get a job at the only other major firm in the area. The problem is that the firm’s owner is family-oriented and would never hire Richard, due to his lack of stable personal relationships. Richard has to come up with a plan. Find a fianc, a fake fianc, and make the owner of the new firm believe it’s real. Who does he know who can fill the role? A woman who is loved by all who meet her, who can charm everyone, and is just the type to make anyone believe the romance is real? Katy, of course.

For Katy, this contract will help her support her aunt and improve the care her aunt receives. It will lighten the heavy burden of always trying to find the money to pay for the care. She despises Richard, but she can tolerate anything for a year, right?

So begins this wonderful story. Enemies, become friends, and then, maybe more. This sort of plot may have been done before, but never so well as in this delightful book by Melanie Moreland. The character development is believable in such a way, that I went from disliking Richard to adoring him, and from sort of sneering at Katy for putting up with him, to applauding the way she can take him on outside the job front, and put him in his place. The gradual change in their relationship took the exact right amount of time, not too fast, not too drawn out. We see it happen in ways that work absolutely, in ways I could see it happening with real people.

I love lots of characters in books, never content with just the two main protagonists, and this book has plenty of fun characters to satisfy me. The big engaging family who runs the new firm are delightful, people I’d love to know. They make the story better, as they interact with Richard and Katy. They help make this lovely romance richer and deeper with extra little details that, for me, take a story from good to great.

I’ve been reading Melanie’s work for a number of years now, and the contract is absolutely my favorite so far. She makes me want to smack Richard, then hug him. She makes me want to tell Katy to stand up to him, then applaud when she does. She makes me laugh, makes me angry, makes me smile. Everything a great story should make you feel. And she reminds me, as I’ve become cynical and scorn most romances, that love stories can still be wonderful things to read. I give my highest recommendation to The Contract. I only wish it could have gone on longer, because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.

Saving Richard VanRyan
By Smusic F. Reader
What makes you love the hero in a romance novel? Is it his sweet and caring nature? His big heart? His compassion? Well scratch that! You won't get that from Richard VanRyan. At least not in the beginning of The Contract, the newest book by the talented Melanie Moreland. In fact, you may actually hate him and find him utterly undeserving of love, especially from the loyal, efficient, and compassionate Katharine Elliot. Regardless of all the reasons you can find to hate him, you find things that make you root for him to find love. I, myself, am a sucker for the damaged hero who is reformed by the love of a good woman. It just wasn't always clear that I would feel that way about Richard. He can make the Grinch look like a lapdog.

His world before Katharine was all about the "WIIFM" (what's in it for me?). He is arrogant, conceited, a bully, and deserving of the nickname form men named Richard. By contrast, Katharine is efficient, compassionate, loyal, and sweet. Some may think she is the resident doormat since she always meets the demands of her arrogant boss despite the vile insults he throws her way. However, once you get to know her, and her backstory, you realize that she is one of the strongest female characters you find in romance novels. She has reasons why she just grins and bear it when it comes to her job. She needs her job, she needs the salary it provides to her, and for strictly altruistic reasons. So bring it on Dick! You cannot break this girl!

When a situation arises that forces Richard to reluctantly rely on Katharine's good nature, she agrees. However, more of her backbone and strength shines through, and she throws him for a loop. She is not your doormat Richard! In fact, she has no problem in telling him off in what became my favorite line for the whole book..."That's it! You want to (beep) someone? Go (beep) yourself, VanRyan!"

Eventually we see great changes in Richard. Once you hear his back story, you understand why he is this way. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't excuse his behavior, but it explains it. You come to realize what he does. He needs Katharine Elliot to show him unconditional love. He needs the Gavins to give him a strong dose of family values. He needs Penny to show him that some things in life are worth all the stuff you have to endure. (Want to know who things other characters are? Go buy the book! You will not be disappointed!)

I absolutely love this story! I have read and love other stories by Melanie Moreland (especially Over the Fence) but there is just something about this story that puts it above the rest. Is it the evolution of Richard? The redemption of Richard? The strong love that develops out of nothing at all? Yes! Yes it is! All that and much, much more! Buy this book today. It is a must read that you won't put down until you finish!
