About the Author
Timothy Richard traveled to China in 1868 as a Baptist missionary. When other missionaries were attempting to stamp out the popular local tales of gods and heroes such as Journey to the West, Richard championed them for the universal messages of spiritual challenge and growth they contain.

Get Waley's Instead

This edition of Journey to the West really has no reason to exist. It's basically a rephrased version of Arthur Waley's classic abridgement, but without the whimsical fun factor. Also, the illustrations are borderline terrifying. The cover looks fine, but the pictures scattered througout the book are hideous. Why does Sun Wukong look like a grizzled hellbeast?

To be honest I skimmed it at best. It was a gift to someone I know is year of the monkey :-) They were pretty thrilled with it though. We don't really believe in the horoscope stuff but it is fun to get things like this.
