About the Author
Alan Williams, PhD, SE, FICE, C Eng, is a registered professional engineer and structural engineer in California, a Fellow and Life Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, and a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California. He obtained his bachelor of science degree and doctorate from University of Leeds in England. Dr. Williams has extensive experience teaching and practicing structural engineering, including designing and constructing bridges, schools, and industrial and commercial structures. He has worked as a senior engineer with the California Department of Transportation and as a Principal for Structural Safety with the California Division of the State Architect. Dr. Williams has published several textbooks and papers on structural engineering design, structural analysis, seismic design, and reinforced and prestressed concrete design.

Structural Depth Reference Manual for the Civil PE Exam addresses the structural depth section of the civil PE exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The structural depth section of the exam is intended to assess your knowledge of structural design principles and practice. The problems in the exam are intended to be representative of the process of designing portions of real structures.

Very thin reference manual. Not comprehensive like CERM or SERM.

Pros: Has some example problems some more information on structural steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and geotech problems.
Cons: I got this SDRM 3 stars because I was expecting much more from something labelled as the structural depth reference manual. If you tried taking the PE exam with this as a reference manual, you'd be up a certain creek without a paddle because this is missing a great deal of basic information. This SDRM has about 10% of the information you need for the structural depth portion of the PE Exam. You would be better off buying the Structural Engineering Reference Manual SERM which is geared towards the SE exam. Almost everything in this SDRM is contained within the Civil Engineering Reference Manual CERM and the topics are expounded upon in greater detail in the SERM. This was a disappointment in comparison to the CERM and SERM and I would only buy this if the price was cut in half.

Not helpful for the exam.

I purchased this book expecting it to contain design information from some of the specifications that I did not have access to. Since I work at a company that deals only with bridges, I did not have access to a majority of the specifications that are used for buildings. Instead, this book just provided some design guidance on a few specialty topics not covered in the CERM. I did not use this book during the exam and the time I spent studying from this book was wasted. If you purchase this book, don't expect to see any of the its covered topics on the exam unless you happen to get lucky.

Not a comprehensive source for the afternoon structural depth portion of the PE exam. I took this to the exam but did not use it. Save your money.
