The Disappearance of Childhood, by Neil Postman

From the vogue for nubile models to the explosion in the juvenile crime rate, this modern classic of social history and media traces the precipitous decline of childhood in America today−and the corresponding threat to the notion of adulthood.

Deftly marshaling a vast array of historical and demographic research, Neil Postman, author of Technopoly, suggests that childhood is a relatively recent invention, which came into being as the new medium of print imposed divisions between children and adults. But now these divisions are eroding under the barrage of television, which turns the adult secrets of sex and violence into poprular entertainment and pitches both news and advertising at the intellectual level of ten-year-olds.

Informative, alarming, and aphorisitc, The Disappearance of Childhood is a triumph of history and prophecy.

Wow! If Postman is correct, we should all be concerned!
By A Customer
Based upon Postman's description of childhood and the reason for its being, our society may be in jeopardy of losing this long-standing concept. Postman says that childhood came into existence about the time of the printing press; it arose out of a need to become a literate society in which adults controlled the information that children could access. Children had to learn to read so they could gain this information. Thus, schools were necessary. Furthermore, the adults' control of the information established a gap between adulthood and childhood. Adults could provide information to children when they deemed it was appropriate to do so. With the growth of electonic media and the move into the information age, adults have somewhat lost their control over the information; consequently, the gap between adulthood and childhood has been narrowed. Children are exposed to those"adult" ideas and thoughts sooner now because of their access to the information, i.e. consider today's television programs as just one example. Postman even contends that adults are more "child-like" in some ways; he give examples of the lack of distinction between clothing and language for adults and children. Perhaps a bit unfairly, Postman blames many of the less than positive changes in today's society on the media. However, this is a great read and provides a lot of "food for thought." The historical perspective that Postman provides on the "invention" of childhod is fascinating. His tracing of the developments growing out of the information age are logical and make a lot of sense. While he raises our concerns, Postman offers no real solutions to the problems.

The Attacks on this Book are as Weak as the Arguments of the Book are Strong
By William Seiter
It is simply untrue to write, as Amazon Reviewer Aaron Swartz writes, that Neil Postman praised the Children's Letters "because they agreed with him". Rather, Postman praised them because they showed by their responses that they valued the declining institution of Childhood, and that they were clearly distressed by the possibilities raised in Postman's Book.

Basically, Postman in his book said: "Society no longer values the distinctiveness of Children relative to Adults, and as a result the institution of Childhood is eroding out of existence."

The Children responded by saying: "We are TOO Distinct from Adults!", and Postman praised them for valuing their declining distinctiveness enough to defend the concept that they are still distinct (a concept all too often not defended by Adults).

Postman values Childhood, and as a result he values (and praises) children who show by their words that they value childhood themselves.

And the thing that is that Postman explicitly said in his Preface to the new edition that he was praising the Children for showing they valued Childhood and for raising the thrilling possibility to Postman's mind that Children could themselves be a conserving force against the array of Adult assaults upon the Childhood Concept. Moreover, he most assuredly gave no indication that he was praising them for agreeing with him.

There is nothing difficult to understand in this, and as a result one may conclude it possible that the misreading of the Amazon reviewer (a misreading clearly intended to discredit Postman) was both willful and deceptive in its intent.

And as for the claim that Postman never explains why he considers the Disappearance of Childhood a bad thing, it is a claim devoid of merit as Postman gives many reasons for why he values Childhood and fears its destruction.

For instance, what part of the explosion in Juvenile Crime does not the Amazon reviewer understand? Or is it that he thinks crime a good thing and thus was perplexed as to why Postman make the unexplained assumption that it's a bad thing?

As Postman lays out in his book, Persons Under the Age of 15 once (1950) committed serious crimes at 1/215th the rate of persons 15 and older, but in deep and disturbing contrast, by 1979 they were up to committing serious crimes at very nearly 1/5th the rate of their elders.

And when I say serious crimes, I exclusively mean Rape, Murder, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault.

Also, does Swartz consider it a good thing that persons under the age of 19 now suffer from a much higher rate of Venereal Disease than they did in time periods that had more respect for the Childhood Construct?

But the primary reason why Postman views the disappearance of childhood as a bad thing is because he believed the rise of the "Adult-Like Child" would lead to the "Child-Like Adult", who would lamentably lack traditional Adult Virtues such as Literacy, Logical Thought, Impulse Control, the Ability to Delay Gratification, and Considerate Manners.

I'll leave it to the readers of this review to draw forth from their experience to see if they might not find some little scraps of evidence here and there that such a rise of a Child-Like Adult has actually occured.

The reason why the Adult-Child would lead to the Child-Adult is a bit too complicated for me to get into here, but suffice it say that Postman explains the whys and wherefores in excellent and logical detail in his book.

Great information, not-so-great argument.
By A Customer
I must disagree with Postman that childhood is not a biological reality. I would be very inclined to agree, if he gave some evidence for that statement. Though, childhood may be also a social construction, as well as a biological one.
This book basically says that everyone acted the same until the printing press came along. This medium created a society where you had adults that could access information via reading, whereas kids really couldn't (not like adults anyway). Hence, we now have a separation between the people that read (adults) and the ones that don't (children). As time went on, adults' books were complicated and had things forbidden to children in them. Children's books were simple and well constructed for their age. People then started seeing children as qualitatively different from themselves; they made special laws and special clothes for children.
However, that changed with TV. Now what adults know, children also know. There is no hiding any adult type information from children (like sex), because of the ease of accessing T.V. Furthermore, unlike books, you don't need to acquire a skill to access information via TV (like being able to read). Since most people aren't blind, the 6-year-old is similar to the 60-year-old now in accessing information. Consequently, we see the disappearance of childhood. (He offers a range of proofs on how childhood is indeed changing.)
Personally, I agree with the thesis, but believe the way it was derived, was weak. However, there is a lot of information to be learned by reading this. It is also a fun book to read. That is why I give it four stars.

Such love for death after reading

Wow, such a fun yet deep read. The narratives are just wonderful, everyday adventures into humanity with a being who will never cease to exist. Mrs.tang paints a friendship that saves her from taking her own life too seriously, while still tackling important issues while baking cookies with death. Highly recommended

When creepy meets funny -hold onto your chocolate chips!
By Amazon Customer
Do you think it's weird to read a book of death poems? Ok, I get that. But this book is so much more.... It takes a tongue-and-cheek view of death personified. For me, the representation of death became a metaphor for anything that haunts us- sorrow, self-criticism, worry- those thoughts that hound us so much that they become our companions. One of the take-aways from this book is encouragement. Understanding that as big and looming as these things we ruminate over can seem, they really are separate and finite. With humor, irony, and levity the poems show us how these things can be quite manageable.

The illustrations are simple and perfectly enhance the mood of the book. They made me laugh.

Have you ever talked with Death?
By David Krieger
My grandfather, in the hospital for congenital heart failure, pneumonia, and cancer all at once, told me that the days were okay, but by night, "the long dark night of the soul" felt endless. He filled those hours with frank conversations with Death, whose visit seemed imminent. They must have been fruitful conversations, because Death didn't finally visit for another couple of years.

My grandfather must have been armed with some of the wisdom and wit contained in this book, because Miss Tang seems intimately comfortable with her partner in palaver. These poems are strictly conversational, but underneath the breezy banter are the profound and terrifying truths we all struggle with. Who will we love, and will they love us? Why are we here, and what part of this existence is true? Why is the universe tending to an ever-greater state of entropy? Death has plenty of answers for Miss Tang.

Death has an answer for everyone, eventually. Why not get a preview, and put him off for a little while, like my Grandpa?

Peer into the minds of eleven men and one woman, all Civil War reenactors, who were hypnotically regressed to the time of that war. From their lips, piece after piece of astonishing information unfolds: details about the historic period and vivid descriptions of battles, camp life, prisons, even their own deaths. The experiences bring to life the most dramatic period in American history. The author’s quest to connect these memories to actual nineteenth-century people led her to cemeteries, battlefields, and historians such as Brian Pohanka, who also participated in the adventure. The book provides an overview of reincarnation research, a reader’s orientation of Civil War terminology and eight pages of photographs. Updated version.

Interesting views!
By Todd E. Newman
Barbara Lane has taken several people that are for the most part reenactors or people absolutely hooked on the Civil War era and basically gave them a past life reading through hypnosis. Barbara Lane writes about each person she has regressed and also writes about their history, how they became interested in the Civil War and what they gained from being regressed or views about themselves. Many times they were shocked, or non-believers about the concept of being hypnotically regressed to go back to a past life and reveal situations of a life time that involved the Civil War era. How their lives in another life time were discussed to show how their lives are effected this time around. It was all very interesting. Reenactors and people interested in reincarnation would love this book as it offers further insight in to strange, but yet unusually accurate ideas about past lives. Who knows, if you love the Civil War, perhaps you were alive back then? Read this book to discover your similarities!

Great if you like a focus on statistics...
By A Customer
I was disappointed to find the stories of Civil War reinactors regressed to Civil War lives to be a very small part of this book. The majority of this book focuses on statistics of these cases and others and the statistics are hashed and rehashed. This book reads like a thesis, which it was in fact, originally intended to be and I was hard pressed to finish it.

Mrs. Lane told the story so realistically that I could almost feel as if I were right there in the Civil War period. It brought it to life for me. I would definitely like to read more by this author!

Blueprint for Counter Education, by Maurice Stein, Marshall Henrichs, Paul Cronin, Adam Michaels, Jeffrey Schnapp, Larry Miller

Maurice R. Stein and Larry Miller’s Blueprint for Counter Education is one of the defining (but neglected) works of radical pedagogy of the Vietnam War era. Originally published as a boxed set by Doubleday in 1970, the book was accompanied by large graphic posters that could serve as a portable learning environment for a new process-based model of education, and a bibliography and checklist that map patterns and relationships between radical thought and artistic practices―from the modernist avant-gardes to postmodernism, from the Bauhaus to Black Mountain College, from Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin to Buckminster Fuller and Norman O. Brown―with Herbert Marcuse and Marshall McLuhan serving as points of anchorage. Blueprint for Counter Education thus serves as a vital synthesis of the numerous intellectual currents in the countercultural debate on the radical reform of schools, universities and ways of learning. To accompany this new facsimile edition of the book and posters, an 80-page booklet features a conversation with the original Blueprint creators, Maurice R. Stein, Larry Miller and designer Marshall Henrichs, as well as essays from Jeffrey Schnapp, Paul Cronin and notes on the design by Adam Michaels of Project Projects.

For having deepened our sense of one of the best known artists in the comics medium, this small treasure is the coffee book of the year. (John Eisler Rain Taxi)

If the basic measure of an avant-garde classic is appreciation long after its initial appearance, then Blueprint for a Counter Education... scores. Perhaps one of the most extraordinary books published by an American commercial publisher... Nearly fifty years later, Blueprint for a Counter Education has been reprinted. (Richard Kostelanetz Rain Taxi)

The spirit of Stein, Miller and Henrichs’ Blueprint for Counter Education remains resonant today. At its core lies the daring notion that, at any given time, in any given place, as needs and circumstances change, any group of people has the potential to build its own house of ideas. (Edward M. Gmez Hyperallergic)

Blueprint for Counter Education by Maurice R. Stein and Larry Miller is one of the defining (but neglected) works of radical pedagogy of the Sixties era. (Steven Heller Print Magazine)

A FAMOUS CATHOLIC PHILOSOPHER ARGUES THAT MAN IS "IN DENIAL"
By Steven H Propp
Dietrich von Hildebrand (1889-1977) was a German Catholic philosopher and theologian, and the author of many books (e.g., Trojan Horse in the City of God: The Catholic Crisis Explained) from a conservative Catholic perspective. This book was first published in 1953.

He begins by stating, "The mark of the present crisis is man's attempt to free himself from his condition as a created being, to deny his metaphysical situation, and to disengage himself from all bonds with anything greater than himself. Modern man is attempting to build a new Tower of Babel." (Pg. 10)

He argues that "We are not merely POSTULATING the objective reality of moral values when, in arguing against the moral relativist, we proffer as argument the fact that he admits objective moral values in his life---at least in his response of indignation or admiration." (Pg. 69) He passionately asserts that "only the suprarational light of Christ can reestablish truth in its God-given place and bring reason back to its ordination toward truth; only the light of Christ can reestablish reason and save it from self-destruction." (Pg. 90)

He concludes on the note, "Not until this absolute primacy of one's vocation as a Christian has been clearly brought out, not until the heresy of efficiency has been overcome, can human life breathe liberty and be filled with sovereign greatness." (Pg. 213)

Though almost 60 years old (and even pre-Vatican II), Hildebrand's books still have a dedicated readership among Catholics in the modern world.

He has written better
By Daniel Koenemann
This is a good book. Much of what Von Hildebrand has to say will be old-news to the reader since almost all of the dangers that Von Hildebrand warns against will be part of the common experience of someone living today. Moreover, it is my opinion that Von Hildebrand writes about many of the same issues in "Trojan Horse in the City of God", but he does a better job. I would recommend that the reader skip this book and go straight to "Trojan Horse in the City of God".

Amazing book!
By Chris Koji
It's a shame that Von Hildebrand's books are not being taught more and in every school. His insight and explanations of what is occurring to the Church are extremely important and highly relevant to today's circumstances. This book was interesting and an easy read, I highly recommend it. So many people never are exposed to these topics and never have a chance to think for themselves and get out of the mental slavery of Western society.

Fantastic Book of Knowledge on Non-Verbal Cues
By Sonny Laskin
What can I say that hasn't been said of the positive reviews already said here? My whole life I was always more focused on verbal cues and didn't put enough attention on non-verbal cues in my interpersonal, formal and business relationships. This book can open up a whole new world for you if you do as Joe enjoins to practice observing his methods and cues on a daily basis. Mr. Navarro curates this book with great and clear pictures to see the various examples of non verbal cues your body gives out. Joe is spot on how the limbic system in our brain gives out involuntary non-verbal cues to detect discomfort, stress and yes of course deception. He provides 20 years of experience in the FBI of interviewing suspects and in my book real world experience trumps book knowledge any day! I love Joe's system to observe non-verbal behaviour patterns of comfort/discomfort, synchrony and emphasis to detect POSSIBLE deception. Why possible? Because as Joe mentions in his book even the most expert and astute behavioral analysts only have a little above a 50% chance of detecting deception. Well, at least Joe is honest regarding that cogent point. But the other uses of observing Joe's listed non-verbal cues in the book can definitely tell when people are stressed and not comfortable. And that can go a long way in being a guide to help you out in your own relationships and communication in your own daily lives!!

Great Thorough Book on Body Language!
By Jay Johnson
This is a great book. It is long and thorough. It has pictures which are very useful to understand the body language the author is talking about. The book goes above and beyond to talk about just about every type of body language possible. It includes much more than discussion of facial expressions.

After reading this book you will find yourself watching people's body language everywhere. It actually is fun applying his teaching to everyday use. I recommend this book to anyone with interaction with people from law enforcement, salesman, lawyers, pretty much anyone.

Many perceptive insights and interesting annecdotes
By treekiller
This book is clearly written with a sense of humor and many perceptive insights into body language and facial expressions. The author's many years as an FBI agent, with a psychology background, give it a persuasive professional tone but its intended audience is laymen. Particularly interesting are the many annecdotes Mr. Navarro includes throughout his narrative.

Lessons from database research have been applied in academic fields ranging from bioinformatics to next-generation Internet architecture and in industrial uses including Web-based e-commerce and search engines. The core ideas in the field have become increasingly influential. This text provides both students and professionals with a grounding in database research and a technical context for understanding recent innovations in the field. The readings included treat the most important issues in the database area -- the basic material for any DBMS professional. This fourth edition has been substantially updated and revised, with 21 of the 48 papers new to the edition, four of them published for the first time. Many of the sections have been newly organized, and each section includes a new or substantially revised introduction that discusses the context, motivation, and controversies in a particular area, placing it in the broader perspective of database research. Two introductory articles, never before published, provide an organized, current introduction to basic knowledge of the field; one discusses the history of data models and query languages and the other offers an architectural overview of a database system. The remaining articles range from the classical literature on database research to treatments of current hot topics, including a paper on search engine architecture and a paper on application servers, both written expressly for this edition. The result is a collection of papers that are seminal and also accessible to a reader who has a basic familiarity with database systems.

A Gold Mine of Database Systems Topics
By Ed Knorr
The book is an outstanding compilation of influential database papers in the database world. Most of the papers are readable for a senior undergraduate audience, or a graduate audience, but probably not for a first course in database systems, simply because students would need a decent understanding of database principles to fully appreciate the contents of this book.

In particular, I like the introductory commentary that Hellerstein and Stonebraker provide for each of the chapters. These are very nice summaries, and they also provide a teaser for the papers that follow in the chapter, and they justify why those papers were included. Both of the editors have the background to speak authoritatively on the subject of database systems, including OS, network, and architectural issues. The editors are not afraid to make prophetic comments about the direction of database research, and the challenges ahead, especially with respect to the Internet and the explosion of data.

I love the two introductory papers by Stonebraker and Hellerstein: "What Goes Around Comes Around" (about 40 pages), and "Anatomy of a Database System" (about 50 pages). The first is a summary of the major models of a DBMS: hierarchical, network, and relational; followed by other models of a DBMS, database, or data: entity-relationship, extended relational, semantic, object-oriented, object-relational, and semi-structured (XML). I intend to give this paper as a reading assignment to my senior undergrads (part of a 2nd database course).

The Anatomy paper is a wonderful overview of a DBMS from a systems perspective (e.g., buffering, I/Os, threads, dispatching, bottlenecks,
hardware architectures, parallelism, query rewriting, optimization, etc.) I'll have to see how this paper fits into the scheduling of the course topics before assigning it, since many of its topics require an understanding of both systems and database principles for full appreciation.

This book is definitely a keeper on my shelf. I'll revisit it many times.

Excellent readings in DB design
By Gregory Gibeling
I am somewhat biased in that I'm taking a course which is co-taught by Hellerstein, however if you're looking to complete understand how database or transaction management systems: this will be an invaluable source of information.

Crammed into this book are a number of papers detailing the history and state of database design as it has evolved over the last 40years, including most of the semainal papers in the field.

Don't expect to read this sucker cover-to-cover, take your time, but it's a good compilation.

Database fundamentals never go out of date

Timeless classic. Collection of classic papers and some recent ones. Also there is a superb introduction to all parts of a database. Moreover a nice commentary about recent state of affairs and how some nosql products have parallels decades back.
