The Wisdom of Crowds, by James Surowiecki

In this fascinating book, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant—better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future.

With boundless erudition and in delightfully clear prose, Surowiecki ranges across fields as diverse as popular culture, psychology, ant biology, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, military history, and politics to show how this simple idea offers important lessons for how we live our lives, select our leaders, run our companies, and think about our world.

From Publishers Weekly
While our culture generally trusts experts and distrusts the wisdom of the masses, New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki argues that "under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them." To support this almost counterintuitive proposition, Surowiecki explores problems involving cognition (we're all trying to identify a correct answer), coordination (we need to synchronize our individual activities with others) and cooperation (we have to act together despite our self-interest). His rubric, then, covers a range of problems, including driving in traffic, competing on TV game shows, maximizing stock market performance, voting for political candidates, navigating busy sidewalks, tracking SARS and designing Internet search engines like Google. If four basic conditions are met, a crowd's "collective intelligence" will produce better outcomes than a small group of experts, Surowiecki says, even if members of the crowd don't know all the facts or choose, individually, to act irrationally. "Wise crowds" need (1) diversity of opinion; (2) independence of members from one another; (3) decentralization; and (4) a good method for aggregating opinions. The diversity brings in different information; independence keeps people from being swayed by a single opinion leader; people's errors balance each other out; and including all opinions guarantees that the results are "smarter" than if a single expert had been in charge. Surowiecki's style is pleasantly informal, a tactical disguise for what might otherwise be rather dense material. He offers a great introduction to applied behavioral economics and game theory.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Surowiecki first developed his ideas for Wisdom of Crowds in his “Financial Page” column of The New Yorker. Many critics found his premise to be an interesting twist on the long held notion that Americans generally question the masses and eschew groupthink. “A socialist might draw some optimistic conclusions from all of this,” wrote The New York Times. “But Surowiecki’s framework is decidedly capitalist.” Some reviewers felt that the academic language and business speak decreased the impact of the argument. Still, it’s a thought-provoking, timely book: the TV studio audience of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire guesses correctly 91 percent of the time, compared to “experts” who guess only 65 percent correctly. Keep up the good work, comrades.

Review
“As entertaining and thought-provoking as The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.... The Wisdom of Crowds ranges far and wide.” –The Boston Globe“A fun, intriguing read–and a concept with enormous potential for CEOs and politicos alike.” –Newsweek“This book is not just revolutionary but essential reading for everyone.”–Christian Science Monitor“Provocative....Musters ample proof that the payoff from heeding collective intelligence is greater than many of us imagine.” –BusinessWeek“There’s no danger of dumbing down for the masses who read this singular book.” –Entertainment Weekly“Clearly and persuasively written.” –Newsday“Convincingly argues that under the right circumstances, it’s the crowd that’s wiser than even society’s smartest individuals. New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki enlivens his argument with dozens of illuminating anecdotes and case studies from business, social psychology, sports and everyday life.” –Entertainment Weekly“The author has a knack for translating the most algebraic of research papers into bright expository prose.” –The New York Times Book Review"Dazzling . . . one of those books that will turn your world upside down. It's an adventure story, a manifesto, and the most brilliant book on business, society, and everyday life that I've read in years." –Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point “Surowiecki’s clear writing and well-chosen examples render complicated mathematical and sociological theories easy to grasp. . . . [His] accounts of how the wisdom of crowds has formed the world we live in will thrill trivia mavens–and may make a better investor (or football coach) out of anyone who takes its conclusions to heart.” –Time Out New York"This book should be in every thinking businessperson's library. Without exception." –Po Bronson, author of What Should I Do With My Life?
“Drawing from biology, behavioral economics, and computer science, Surowiecki offers answers to such timeless–and often rhetorical–questions as “Why does the line you’re standing in always seem to move the slowest?” and “Why is there so much garbage on TV?” The result is a highly original set of conclusions about how our world works.” –Seed Magazine“As readers of Surowiecki’s writings in The New Yorker will know, he has a rare gift for combining rigorous thought with entertaining example. [The Wisdom of Crowds] is packed with amusing ideas that leave the reader feeling better-educated.” –Financial Times (London)“The book is deeply researched and well-written, and the result is a fascinating read.” –Deseret Morning News"Jim Surowiecki has done the near impossible. He's taken what in other hands would be a dense and difficult subject and given us a book that is engaging, surprising, and utterly persuasive. The Wisdom of Crowds will change the way you think about markets, economics, and a large swatch of everyday life." –Joe Nocera, editorial director of Fortune magazine and author of A Piece of the Action “Makes a compelling case.” –The Gazette (Montreal)“Deftly compressing a small library’s worth of research into a single slim and readable volume, the Financial Page columnist at The New Yorker makes his bid to capture the zeitgeist as his colleague Malcolm Gladwell did with The Tipping Point. . . . The author has produced something surprising and new: a sociological tract as gripping as a good novel.” –Best Life“Surowiecki is a patient and vivid writer with a knack for telling examples.” –Denver Post "Most crowds of readers would agree that Jim Surowiecki is one of the most interesting journalists working today. Now he has written a book that will exceed even their expectations. Anyone open to re-thinking their most basic assumptions–people who enjoyed The Tipping Point, say–will love this book." –Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball
“Surowiecki’s is a big-idea book.” –Salon.com"It has become increasingly recognized that the average opinions of groups is frequently more accurate than most individuals in the group. The author has written a most interesting survey of the many studies in this area and discussed the limits as well as the achievements of self-organization." –Kenneth Arrow, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and Professor of Economics (Emeritus), Stanford University“Clever and surprising.... The originality and sheer number of demonstrations of the impressive power of collective thinking provided here are fascinating, and oddly comforting.” –Bookforum“An illuminating book.” –Detroit Free Press

we are smarter in groups, even those of us that deny it
By Frank L. Greenagel II
James Surowiecki has been writing for the New Yorker for over a decade. This is his first book, and it was published in 2005.

Surowiecki looks out how using the judgement of the group helps to make better decisions, as long as the group is diverse, comes by their knowledge separately and gets to make their judgements (votes) at the same time (so they aren't unduly influenced by early voters or those with more power).

I've made it an extra credit book in my senior social work class at Rutgers, and I think that it is a wonderful book about how we think and make decisions (on par with Outliers & How We Know What Isn't So).

How more of us can be smarter than less of us.
By Barry L. Davis
Subtitled, "Why the many are smarter than the few and how collective wisdom shapes business, societies and nations." He starts out by quote a great curmudgeon -- H. L. Mencken: "No one in this world, so far as I know, has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of great masses of the plain people," then proceeds to prove him wrong. Replete with examples of how the aggregate wisdom of a group is greater than the smartest member, his first story is of a 1906 Exhibition where British scientist Francis Galton compiled the guesses on the dressed weight of a price ox by 787 attendees, only to find that the average guess was within 1 lb.!

Surowiecki cites three basic problems that collective intelligence can address: Cognition - problems that have a definite solution (who will win the Superbowl?), Coordination - trying to get everyone on the same page (driving safely in heavy traffic) and Cooperation - getting self-interested, distrustful people to work together (paying taxes, dealing with pollution, etc.).

Scores of case studies come from finding a lost submarine (a group of independent individuals' scenarios located the sub within 220 yards of where it went down from a search area that was 20 miles wide -- sadly, too late for the crew) to how Google finds what you want to the Challenger disaster (how not to do it, unfortunately). Surowiecki shows the importance of independence, diversity and private judgment to improve the results. Actually, too many experts or too much collaboration hinders more than helps. He shows that "the best collective decisions are the product of disagreement and contest, not consensus or compromise. An intelligent group . . . does not ask its members to modify their positions in order to let the group reach a decision everyone can be happy with." Interestingly enough, although communication is important in groups, too much communication reduces the results of the decision process. Experts can add to the problem in the same way.

A fascinating book, rich with examples from business, industry, education, government, etc.

Important and Paradoxical
By Steven Farron
Surowiecki's The Wisdom of Crowds documents and analyzes an extremely important phenomenon. When people guess at a question to which nearly no one knows the answer but most people can make a sensible guess (e.g., what proportion of the world's airports are in the USA; how many marbles can fit into a box that is a meter on each side) the average of a large group is nearly always more accurate than the guess of any member of that group. Moreover, the more people involved, the more accurate the average is.
This phenomenon was first discovered by Francis Galton, Charles Darwin's first cousin. Throughout his life, Galton was obsessed with measurement and categorization. His study of fingerprints led to their use by the police to identify criminals. His study of twins revealed that biological heredity determines intelligence and temperament. He also worked out the coefficient of correlation, which is a basis of modern statistics. In 1906, when Galton was eighty-five and still as inquisitive as ever, he visited a country fair. One of the events was a contest to try to guess what the weight of an ox, which was on display, would be after it had been killed and dressed. In order to enter the contest, a person had to pay sixpence and write his guess, along with his name and address, on a piece of paper. After the contest was over, Galton borrowed the papers with the guesses. There were 787 papers in total. To his amazement, the average guess was only one pound less that the actual weight (1,198 pounds). That was closer than any individual guess. Yet, some of the participants in the contest were butchers and cattle raisers, who would be expected to do much better than the average.
This phenomenon also applies to predictions of future events. That is why it is nearly impossible to make money consistently by betting on sporting events - because the odds are determined by the average of all bets, which is extremely accurate. The most striking illustration of this phenomenon is the otherwise inexplicable fact that, with very few exceptions, professional stock investors (managers of mutual funds, pension funds, etc.) do worse than the stock market indexes. Professional investors are highly intelligent people, who devote all their time to analyzing stocks and stock market trends; they have specially developed soft-ware and teams of assistants. But their analyses are not as accurate as the average analysis of all investors.
However, for the wisdom of crowds to work, two conditions must be met (pages 10-11, 36-7). One is that the opinions of the individuals involved must be formed and expressed independently of the others. When decisions are made by groups meeting together, the group is often swayed by a consensus that seems to have formed or by one or two of its member who seem to have more expertise, or who express their opinions forcefully. Also, the individuals involved must have some knowledge of what is involved. For example, the average prediction of Indonesian peasants as to which team will win the National Football League championship would be worthless.
In line with the second condition, the wisdom of crowds does not apply to areas of technical expertise. The average guess of a crowd as to the weight of an ox when it has been slaughtered and dressed is more accurate than the estimate of any butcher in the crowd. But the butchers in the crowd are more adept than any non-butchers at carving the ox, storing its meat, and preparing it for sale.
Surowiecki offers a general explanation (pages 10-11) for why the crowds are wiser than any of their individual members and specific reasons (pages 34, 44-50) for why professional stock investors do worse than the stock indexes. I found the latter explanations more convincing than the former.
Surowiecki also discusses (pages 236, 245-6) the obvious objection that the average prices of stocks, houses, and commodities often rise and fall sharply, without regard to the value of the assets involved. Such price swings do not occur with ordinary goods and services, such as televisions or haircuts; nor does a rise in price of ordinary goods and services induce more people to buy them. Average predictions of the results of sporting events or of elections are also immune from irrational price bubbles. In these cases, the accuracy of the predictions is decided unequivocally at a specific time in the near future. That keeps the crowd tethered to reality. But when the prices of stocks, houses, and commodities rise, that means that they can be resold at a higher price; and there is no point at which the bet is definitely over and the bettors have undeniably been proved right or wrong.

About the Author
Richard Sigmund was born on March 19, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa. His grandfather was praying as Richard was being born, and the Lord told him, "Through him, I will answer prayer." Whose prayer? The prayer of his great-grandfather, who was a Spirit-filled, Jewish, circuit-riding preacher during the Civil War.The Lord first appeared to Richard when he was four years old. As a child, he started preaching in a country Methodist church in Iowa. His grandfather knew healing evangelist Jack Coe Sr., and Rev. Coe brought Richard to Omaha in 1949 to preach. While the boy who became known as "Little Richard" preached, the anointing came upon him, and he saw angels. When he was about nine years old, he presented the gospel before the meetings of world-renowned evangelist and miracle worker A. A. Allen. Richard was with Allen for about ten years; tutors enabled him to maintain his schoolwork while he was on the road. Also during that time, Richard was with evangelist Lee Girard and presented his testimony during William Branham meetings. In his early twenties, Richard had a fruitful ministry for a time in Phoenix, Arizona, and then held tent meetings with considerable success among the Navajo in northern Arizona and in other revival meetings around the country. In 1974, while he was ministering at a small church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, he was declared dead for eight hours after a traffic accident, during which he had his experiences of heaven and hell.Over the years, Richard has preached the gospel through television programs, radio broadcasts, and speaking engagements. He has been in meetings with Kathryn Kuhlman and Oral Roberts, and he was interviewed by Pat Robertson. Richard has ministered in England, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, and many other countries. In South Africa, he followed David Nunn and Morris Cerullo in a special series of meetings. It was Rex Humbard who encouraged him to tell his story of a place called heaven. In the early 1990s, Richard met his wife, Priscilla, a fellow native of Iowa. After living in Texas and Missouri, they returned to Iowa, where their organization, Cleft of the Rock Ministries, is now based. Richard is associated with World Bible Way Fellowship.

I highly recommend it.
By Philip Anderson
This book had a profound effect on me, my wife and other who heard it. Most staggering was Bro. Richard's account of meeting people in heaven that I knew on earth (William Branham) and seeing preparations in progress for the arrival of others that I now know, including the account of the building of Dr. Paul Hegstrom's home for his arrival. I just completed taking the Life Skills class that Dr. Paul Hegstrom and Judy Hegstrom founded and it was unique and life changing.
I have had many supernatural experiences with God in my 60+ years here on earth and everything in this book rings completely true to me. I highly recommend it.

like loved ones being able to look down at times ...
By R. Heiss
Of all that I've read of different ones experiencing Heaven, none strike me as so personable in that time and time again, he just says he doesn't understand it but this is what he saw or heard, even saying there were times, he wasn't permitted to see or know further, or its memory was wiped away [he reportedly had a "photographic" memory]. Along with the the details he gives - several correspond to Kat Kerr's experience, like loved ones being able to look down at times and see important events of our lives, "stores" in Heaven designed exactly for your tastes, mansions in the sky, etc. It's a book, I have read twice and want to keep reading, as if to instill so many of its important details in mind; longing already in my heart for more of Heaven.

Sigmund states he was told by God that he would be alive when the Rapture occurred. [...] Sigmund finally died in Oct 2010. Considering so much of what Sigmund readily admits he didn't understand, couldn't adequately convey, or was forbidden to relate - all speaking to his honesty - one could as well say that what he says here that definitely thought he heard the Lord tell him about being alive when He came for His church, which he really wasn't as clear about as he thought, and in retrospect, we can see that though he is now "dead", he is really more alive than ever in Heaven and will be when the Rapture actually does takes place!

What Sigmund should have given precedence to in considering what he thought he clearly heard and where he really must of misunderstood is that in Scripture, the Lord Himself says no one knows the hour, not even the angels in Heaven, but the Father only, when these things will occur [Matt. 24: 36]. While the Lord here is speaking mostly about the events connected to His second coming, which takes place at least seven years after the Rapture, the Rapture is part of what the Lord had in mind, though such wisely would not be revealed because it was not part of God's program for the nation of Israel, and only then later given first to the Apostle Paul as part of the mystery revealed for the church today or for this dispensation [Rapture will restate God's program for the nation of Israel, which will then follow with the long awaited kingdom age of Messiah's reign on earth from Jerusalem].

Sigmund's experience of Heaven occurred in Oct 1974 or at least 25 years earlier before his interview with Sid Roth and if anything appears "incredible" about Sigmund it is waiting until 2009 to publish it all, unless he had written it earlier in a different way. While he has been accused of maybe "embellishing" the facts, the fact of it all remains, and what he saw would always stay with him, more than what he was told, unless the Holy Spirit "brought it to his remembrance". The many supernatural testimonies others give in relation to Sigmond's experience, his account, and God working through him afterwards make it all even more credible!

At the end of the book, he gives several incidents directly related to either his heightened ministry since the Lord returned him to earth, or others in association with him. One was simply about a group of soldiers, caught behind enemy fire during the Iraq war, thinking they were all going to die, having no Bible but one had a copy of this book and as they were all listening to it being read, they suddenly heard a loud thud! Peering over their embankment or wall, they saw the enemy all fleeing. They escaped then from there, too. The next day or so, some of these enemy were captured and asked why they ran? What they heard was amazing! They had suddenly seen huge men in the sky with fiery swords and one brought his sword down and literally split the wall! Needless to say, these warriors were sent by God and no doubt in direct relation relation to the testimony of Sigmund about Heaven.

In the website below are many different testimonies regarding Sigmund's Heavenly experience and God's work in his life, following: [...]

Wow, What A Book!!!!
By Ruthetta Young
When I received this book I couldn't put it down. Will reread it over and over as a reminder of what is in store for those that Love the Lord. I have read other books over the years that has had some of the things he saw and heard, but never one that had so many things I never heard. Eye has not seen, nor ears have heard the things that God has prepared for those that love him. But God has revealed them onto us by his Spirit. He is also in these last day's has been revealing them to many of his people like this brother who has now gone onto Glory!.

Creating a Learning Society: A New Approach to Growth, Development, and Social Progress (Kenneth J. Arrow Lecture Series), by Joseph E. St

Since its publication Creating a Learning Society has served as an effective tool for those who advocate government policies to advance science and technology. It shows persuasively how enormous increases in our standard of living have been the result of learning how to learn, and it explains how advanced and developing countries alike can model a new learning economy on this example. Creating a Learning Society: Reader's Edition uses accessible language to focus on the work's central message and policy prescriptions. As the book makes clear, creating a learning society requires good governmental policy in trade, industry, intellectual property, and other important areas. The text's central thesis―that every policy affects learning―is critical for governments unaware of the innovative ways they can propel their economies forward.

When the ancient evil of the Blackbringer rises to unmake the world, only one determined faerie stands in its way. However, Magpie Windwitch, granddaughter of the West Wind, is not like other faeries. While her kind live in seclusion deep in the forests of Dreamdark, she's devoted her life to tracking down and recapturing devils escaped from their ancient bottles, just as her hero, the legendary Bellatrix, did 25,000 years ago. With her faithful gang of crows, she travels the world fighting where others would choose to flee. But when a devil escapes from a bottle sealed by the ancient Djinn King himself- the creator of the world- she may be in over her head. How can a single faerie, even with the help of her friends, hope to defeat the impenetrable darkness of the Blackbringer?

At a time when fantasy readers have an embarrassment of riches in choosing new worlds to fall in love with, this first novel by a fresh, original voice is sure to stand out.

From Booklist
Magpie, granddaughter of the West Wind, is born of dreams. When Humans—"mannies"—start letting loose devils in the world, faerie Magpie and her band of rough-and-tumble, cheroot-smoking crows must start hunting them down. The tale takes its time in unfolding, with lovely echoes of its literary antecedents from Tolkien on down. Magpie also learns it is she who must keep the dark from swallowing the world. She finds where the dragons, and her ancient heroine, Bellatrix, have gone, and she wakes an ancient djinni. The tapestry of the world needs reweaving, and a blond, tattooed princeling needs a way to remake his malformed wings. This all braids together into a radiant conclusion. Vibrant language overcomes a surfeit of telling rather than showing. 'Pie is one tough faerie, and the way is open for more tales about her to come. DeCandido, GraceAnne A.

Whimsical, lush MG high fantasy that will also appeal to older teens and adults
By ViolettePen
Actual Rating: 4.5 / 5

I did a double-take when a Goodreads friend recommended Blackbringer for my fairy novel "market research" project. For some reason, I was under the impression that Daughter of Smoke and Bone was Laini Taylor's first novel. (It's actually her fourth.) And since I'd been meaning to read Taylor's work for a while, Blackbringer went to the top of my TBR list. Well, I'm now grateful I made that choice, because this was such a treat!

Blackbringer introduces readers to Dreamdark, a modern-day forest tucked away from human knowledge and teeming with magic-wielding faeries, hedge and scavenger imps, and djinn. One of the faeries, Magpie Windwitch, has devoted her life to hunting devils in the human realm. When Magpie and her flock of talking crows track down an opened devil's bottle once sealed by the Djinn King, she knows something is terribly wrong. Her search takes her back to Dreamdark, where she reunites with old friends, meets new ones, and must contend with a suspicious new faerie queen and the standoffish Djinn King himself. But how can she - a tiny faerie - defeat something that is no mere devil, but a vindictive, ravenous evil that threatens to destroy Dreamdark and the world beyond?

Within a couple chapters, I fell in love with Blackbringer and its rich world-building. The history of Dreamdark and its faeries, and the origin story of how the djinn created Earth, plays a crucial part of the story. Yet it's sprinkled methodically throughout, and readers learn everything they need to know as the plot unfolds. And Laini Taylor's writing style... Gosh, it took my breath away! Fluid, precise, and lyrical, all without becoming too sophisticated for a young audience. Her grace with language bolstered everything from Dreamdark's lushness to the faeries' ethereal wings and garb, to the mysteries of the Djinn King and the "tapestry" holding the world together. Occasional illustrations from Taylor's husband Jim Di Bartolo also accentuate the story's charm.

And the characters! Magpie's a sweet yet spunky tomboy who's eager for adventure and loyal to everyone she cares about. The crows, especially Magpie's mount Calypso, entertained me with their comedic relief and devotion to their beloved huntress. Still others like Magpie's childhood friend Poppy Manygreen and the persistent prince Talon Ratherstring are well-rounded and memorable in their own way. Plus, aren't the names adorable?? They match the playful spirit of Dreamdark, and are perfect for a Middle Grade fantasy.

The Dreamdark faeries are more of the Tinkerbell kind than the dark fey folk of Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey series. They're tiny, winged, and ethereal in appearance, with a range of magical talents. They're also curious, nature-connected, and zealous fighters. You wouldn't want to mess with Magpie and crew if you too were the size of a thumb! Taylor also takes advantage of the Dreamdark faeries' flying abilities by making it part of the action. Swooping, darting, and other aerial-robics turned fights and chases into breathless scenes that played like a movie in my mind's eye, which only fueled my adoration for the book even more.

The only thing I wasn't always keen on was the omniscient point of view. The story isn't told entirely from Magpie's perspective, and sometimes Taylor switches back and forth between POV characters during a single chapter. I don't mind novels with multiple POV characters as long as the viewpoint switches at a logical endpoint, like the end of a chapter. Omniscience, however, doesn't always prepare readers for those character-to-character transitions. But there's a bright side to this double-edged sword: Had Taylor not used omniscient POV in Blackbringer, I wouldn't have grown to love the secondary characters so much. So, it's a teensy bit hard for me to say she should have avoided that approach. ;)

Which explains the overall grade I've awarded Blackbringer. This is a delightful flight from start to finish, with a whimsicality akin to the Harry Potter series, Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, and Philip Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy. It may be geared more for pre-teens, but older teens and adults will also appreciate the sophisticated world-building and the poetry in Laini Taylor's prose. Actually, I almost feel ashamed for not reading Taylor's work sooner! I'm absolutely game for her second Dreamdark novel, Silksinger. As for her more well-known series... Guess which YA fantasy I'll review next? (Hint: It's mentioned in the first paragraph of this review.)

Surprising & Terrific Read
By Athena PN
First, I got the kindle version - don't; get the paperback because the few illustrations are worth seeing on paper.

That said, this is a well-plotted, surprising, intriguing work. The heroine is a smart, tough cookie as are her companions, and when you're in the company of stage-performing crows who smoke cheroots, well, you're in good company indeed! There are plenty of twists to the plot incorporating some standard tales in surprising ways, a beautifully constructed mythology of creation and life/death along with a good many of The Good Folk. Young humans will like this and it stands up well for adult readers too, a rare bit of writing indeed.

Ms. Taylor's writings have thus far been a rare combination of intelligence, insightfulness, and intriguing plots & characters. I hope she continues writing for a very, very long time.

So good this is my first review
By Diane Petersen
I have had a kindle since the first "no touch screen" came out so many years ago. I have never written a review until now. Laini Taylor has a gift I don't get to read often. The gift of writing so you "see" the story. Her imagination is wonderful. The story of Magpie Windwitch has all the ups and downs you want and expect. I won't give any spoilers so read the book and you'll laugh and cry and want more more more!

Review
"This advanced undergraduate textbook provides an excellent introduction to one of the most exciting areas of modern physics. It combines a pedagogical 'from first principles' approach with a comprehensive survey of the latest developments in particle physics, including the recent discovery of the Higgs boson. Thoroughly recommended for both students and teachers alike."
James Stirling, Imperial College London

"Professor Thomson has written a great textbook on modern particle physics (including a masterful exposition of the discovery of the Higgs boson) that provides a professional introduction to the field, suitable for upper-division undergraduate as well as graduate courses. His distinctive presentation style combines clarity with admirable level of rigor. The book is richly illustrated with helpful diagrams and tables, and is destined to be a favorite of both students and instructors alike."
Dmitry Budker, University of California, Berkeley

"Mark Thomson has written a wonderful new introductory textbook on particle physics ... [it] is well written ... easy to read, with clear pedagogical lines of reasoning, and the layout is pleasing ... as I am teaching an introduction to theory this autumn, I will definitely be using this book."
CERN Courier

"... gem of a book ... excellent and highly readable ... well structured with useful chapter summaries and many good student exercises with on-line solutions. It is thoroughly recommended."
The Observatory

"... this book has my highest recommendation. In its effective, clear and comprehensive treatment of so much detailed material, it represents a remarkable achievement on the part of its author, and is likely to become a standard work to put into the hands of new graduate students in particle physics. Their supervisors will do well to buy it too!"
Peter J. Bussey, Contemporary Physics

About the Author
Mark Thomson is Professor of Experimental Particle Physics at the University of Cambridge. He has over 700 publications covering a number of major areas in high energy particle physics. His main research interests are in electron-positron collider physics, neutrino physics and the development of novel and powerful reconstruction techniques for cutting edge detector technologies. Best In Class
By AmazonDan
OVERALL: I adopted Thomson's book this year for my introductory particle physics course (senior physics majors mostly). I have waited for the completion of my course before offering a review. I have adopted about five texts over the years and have seriously evaluated about eight others. The bottom line is that Modern Particle Physics by Mark Thomson is easily the best book for this course.

PEDAGOGY: An instructor who invests a great effort into making physics concepts understandable will find a kindred spirit in the author. Professor Thomson always makes the best pedagogical choice in the way he presents the topic. Though his writing style is less engaging than Griffith's the clarity is superior. Furthermore, Thomson very accurately identifies the common points of confusion and provides discussion explicitly designed to remove ambiguities. This makes the book extremely valuable for instructors and I would say that no text does this better.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: This book is at the highest level that I would attempt for undergraduates. This is the best book for a student's first encounter with the Dirac equation. With this book the students will learn to do the famous perturbative QED calculations. There is no reason that I can see to delay this learning until graduate school. Undergraduate students have the requisite mathematical skills. Critically important, the book delays employing trace theorems and uses the helicity basis for calculations early on. This allows the students to "see" the physics inside of Feynman calculations. The chiral structure of the Standard Model is at the core of the theory and I find that even advanced books fail to convey this concept effectively. Unfortunately, this text could do better along these lines as well; however, the students do have to confront the concept repeatedly in this text so they will make progress. The expositions on experimental analyses are less sophisticated than Perkins which is perfectly fine for an introductory course.

SCOPE OF MATERIAL: This book covers just about every particle physics topic that should be covered at this level. It is clearly too much for a single semester course so the instructor will need to plan accordingly. The individual sections are often self-contained enough to allow leaps around the book.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The only real problem I have with this book is that I did not write it.

A Joyful Ride!

The previous reviewer seems to be reviewing the Standard Model and not the book.
This book, considering to whom it was intended, is the best I've seen. The style and organization of the material makes you realize the author is a gifted teacher, a generous one at that, he just doesn't state results, he guides and illuminates with plenty of alacrity the structure of the theory. His writing is clear and flows, you are not distracted with the jerky style of some authors.
Of course you must meet the prerequisites, if you don't, it could be tough going. Someone trying to enter the field in a serious way should read this book first!
The book's appearance, font and spacing, is attractive.
For me it was a joy to have read this book.

what a wonderful book. This text makes the world of particle ...
By David
I am not usually inclined to write reviews but in this case.. what a wonderful book. This text makes the world of particle physics accessible to those with a college level physics background and a basic understanding of quantum mechanical principles, relativity, and linear algebra. I am in the medical profession but have a degree in physics from 1977. I think that the text is written at an upper level undergraduate level. For those who want to see the math at a basic level this is as good as it gets. The author has gone to great effort to write out all of the mathematical detail which is often lacking in other books. The Higgs boson, gauge theory, electroweak mixing, quantum chromodynamics are all written with great clarity. I am very happy with my purchase.

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat (Emmy and the Rat), by Lynne Jonell

Emmy was a good girl. At least she tried very hard to be good. She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days.

She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .

Hilarious, inventive, and irresistably rodent-friendly, Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is a fantastic first novel from acclaimed picture book author Lynne Jonell.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 3–6—Emmy Addison was perfectly happy as the daughter of bookstore owners—and then her parents inherited a lot of money and she suddenly became invisible. She can't understand why her formerly attentive and loving mother and father keep taking off for faraway places and leaving her in the hands of an incredibly controlling nanny named Miss Barmy. And no one at school seems to know she exists. Then, she is bitten by the classroom rat and discovers that she can understand every word he says, as can Joe, one of the cool kids in her class who was also bitten. At this point, events start to unfold and a fast-paced adventure begins. To Joe's chagrin, he discovers that a second bite makes a person shrink to the size of an action figure and Emmy discovers that Miss Barmy has been mixing animal essences together to control the Addisons' lives. With the aid of new animal friends, Emmy embarks upon a perilous path to undo the evil nanny's sinister plans. A mystery is cleverly woven into this fun and, at times, hilarious caper, and children are likely to find themselves laughing out loud during some parts. A medley of endearing characters adds to an already delightful read.—Robyn Gioia, Bolles School, Ponte Vedra, FL

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Emmy's world has turned upside down. Since her family inherited a fortune, her parents have become obsessed with status and money, her teachers and fellow students ignore her, and her welfare has been left in the hands of her coldhearted nanny, Miss Barmy. Now, she can hear the class pet, a rat, talking. What's going on? Jonell takes readers on a merry, sometimes scary, romp, as Emmy enters the Antique Rat store and learns about a world of rodents with eclectic powers that are being used by Miss Barmy to get control of Emmy's family and their fortune. Although the considerable action is sometimes convoluted, and a couple of dropped story lines are hastily stitched up, this tale turns smoothly on its fanciful premise and fabulous characters. As in so many stories featuring a rat, the sneaky rodent gets the best lines; so it is here with Rat, who is by turns boastful, whiny, maudlin, and menacing. It's fun to watch remarkably good Emmy and especially bad Barmy spar, and the revelation of the nanny's secret admirer speaks to the endurance of true love. Inside, the book is decorated with a picture of a tree limb and a climbing rat. Flip the pages, and Rat tumbles and falls. Cooper, Ilene

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat
By Kirsten G. Cutler
A diabolical nanny, a clever thoughtful little girl and a talking rat face off in this deliciously witty and intelligent story. Emmy is an exceedingly well-behaved girl who enjoyed life with her parents and had many friends before an inheritance from a great uncle brings an end to cozy family interactions and Emmy and her parents move to her Great-Uncle's mansion. Now Emmy attends a new school, her parents are always off traveling and Emmy is supervised by Miss Barmy, a very unpleasant and strange nanny who is constantly tearing down her self- esteem and giving her mysterious medicines, one turned her face orange. Her classmates and teacher hardly notice her, "Emma? Emmaline Addison?" Mr. Herbifore gazed out over the heads of his students. Emmy stood up. "No, I don't see her," he said into the phone. "Emmy walked forward and stood by the teacher's desk. What did she have to do, she wondered, bewildered. Throw firecrackers under his chair? Hang from the ceiling and make like a monkey? She tugged at the teacher's sleeve and spoke loudly in his ear. "Here I am, Mr. Herbifore." The teacher stared at her doubtfully. Oh? Are you sure?" One day, the classroom rat tells her that she is too nice, "A little meanness is good for the soul. I highly recommend it." At the end of an entertaining repartee that includes Rat's response to Emmy's surprised comment, "Rodents play soccer?" "Of course they play soccer, he snapped. What do you think they do for fun? Run about, frightening elephants? Scavenge in churches for crumbs? Really, your ignorance is appalling." Rat pleads with Emmy to release him from his cage and when she does this engaging story explodes with adventure, suspense, and humor.

A satisfying read from beginning to end.
By J. M. Urbanovic
Lynne has created an instant classic; it reminds me of my favorite stories like Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet and Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang. Her story has memorable characters that you'll love and enjoy right from the start and a storyline that combines mystery, magic, real life problems and wonderful, droll humor. It's delightful to watch Emmy break out of her "too goodness" to solve the mystery and to save her family. Not to mention saving not just herself but all of her newly made friends. It's gripping, its a bit scary, its funny and comforting. It is a satisfying read from beginning to end that I think kids and adults both would enjoy.

...talky rodents that aren't abhorrent, parents who don't care and a nasty au pair...
By H. Bala
Most importantly, no rodents were harmed in the making of this book. Just as importantly, there's a sequel to this book, which gladdens me because Lynne Jonell's quirky EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT may be intended for middle grade readers, but it's a universal truth that talking rat stories recognize no age boundaries. If you've got a yen for something in the vein of Stuart Little, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, or the Redwall series, take a chance on EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT.

Poor Emmaline Augusta Addison, a lonely little girl whose very rich parents are always away gallivanting around the world. Emmy has earned straight A's in class and won all sorts of trophies and ribbons for her ballet accomplishments, all in a futile effort to garner attention from her parents. In school, her presence barely registers on her classmates and teacher. And almost as unbearable as her parents' neglect are the icy ministrations of her quite frightening nanny, Miss Barmy. But one day in class Emmy, being ignored as usual, on a whim begins talking to the classroom rat kept in a cage. Who then talks right back, quite rudely. It's that kind of book. Emmy comes away from their dialogue knowing that the Rat scoffs at her being too nice a person.

Accompanied by the Rat, Emmy soon embarks on a very strange adventure, peopled with an unpleasant rat catcher, a shrunken professor, sentient rodents gifted with peculiar properties, and the sinister nanny Miss Barmy. In this adventure, we root for Emmy as she tries to rise above various perils and also her innate "niceness." In the course of things, Emmy learns that her loneliness and her parents' neglect are all tied into a nasty scheme, and you can probably guess who's behind that (*cough* nanny).

There's an interesting Roald Dahl vibe going on with EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT. Lynne Jonell juxtaposes real world situations with curious fantasy elements, unlikely science experiments, a dash of dark humor, and a sense of the macabre. There is also some rather pointed commentary about uncaring parents and about the news media's vulture-like tendencies.

I relished the interplay between the humans and the anthropomorphized creatures, and I dug the creativity of Jonell coming up with the magical rodents, and the sheer variety of their respective attributes. Most of these rats, mice, chipmunks, beavers, marmots and other assorted rodents are kept locked up in a shop and their services made available for a fee. Potions and spells are then crafted which can promote forgetfulness, follicle growth, a sudden reduction in height, etc. There's even a concoction which, when taken by a person, allows anyone within hearing distance to, uh, sniff out that person's lies. And, of all these special creatures, the Endear Mouse is easily my favorite. She is a-friggin'-dorable.

Crude and cravenly and yet, for all that, managing to be likeable and funny, the Rat is the book's breakout character. One bite from the Rat allows you to communicate with him. A second bite shrinks you to smaller than a Barbie doll - that's why he's called the Shrinking Rat of Schenectady. Ah, but what happens when he bites you a third time?

For all the cute enchanted shenanigans gracing the book, a dark undertone weaves in and out, and this is brought about by Miss Barmy, an intense malevolent presence. Miss Barmy is the anti-Mary Poppins and, like all monsters in those really good fairy tales, she plays for keeps and doesn't seem to realize she's in a kid-friendly story. You really don't want to be taking her remedies and potions and baked "goods" (or as I like to call them, baked "evils"). Miss Barmy, unrepentantly wicked and calculating, really ramps up the suspense.

As a cherry on top, illustrator Jonathan Bean works his own magic and enables you to rapidly flip the pages and watch the Rat in animated motion as he falls from a tree only to land safely on Emmy's hands. I like flip books - they cater to both young and old. That's another universal truth.
